Kids and Teens: Would You Sign Your Kid Up for this Day Camp?
Friday 28 March 2008 @ 8:04 pm

Let’s say you received a flyer for a new summer day camp in the mail that contained the following information:

“We take your kids and keep them inside all day long. We do not allow them to move around much. They will spend their day in front of screens, the TV screen, the computer screen, and the video game screen. We like to call it Screen Time. Instead of three meals a day, we feed them all day long with junk food to keep them from being hungry for meals. Our camp is only $250 a day, please send a check for the whole week.”

Would you send your kid to this camp? Of course not! What parent in their right mind would?

So why do we do it?

So why do we let our kids do this everyday?

If you will indulge a 47 year old guy just one little “when I was young rant” here goes:

When I was a kid, they had to drag me inside for dinner or bedtime.

Many people my age tell me the same thing.

Most of these things do not happen all at once, they just sort of creep up on you.

What to do

Screen time is not necessarily a bad thing. It’s when screen time is the only thing that it becomes a bad thing.

A strategy that has worked in our family and in the families with whom I counsel and coach is this:

For every hour that a kid spends in front of a screen, the kid has to spend an hour outside having fun.

Simple, powerful, it works. Now go use this stuff!

Breast Implants
Friday 28 March 2008 @ 5:36 pm

Cosmetic surgery is a booming business nowadays. Nose jobs, breast implants and facelifts are just a few of the ever-expanding cosmetic enhancement offerings of plastic surgeons nationwide.

Breast augmentation is actually the most performed cosmetic surgeries today in the U.S. The undeniable pedestal we as Americans have placed the female breast on is nonetheless a phenomenon to be pondered and studied. But that is for another discussion!

What Does Breast Augmentation Cost?

Breast augmentation, on average, costs about $5,000. Depending on who performs the surgery or where the surgery is performed also plays a part in the complete price of the surgery. Another factor is the method of implantation or type of implant chosen.

Methods of Breast Implant Insertion and Incision

1.) Transumbilical - This is one of the less opted for and less offered methods of implantation. This may be due to its more complicated nature (insertion through the belly button), and a smaller amount of surgeons being trained on and willing to offer this particular method of insertion. Its advantages are that it results in very minimal scarring and no scars whatsoever around the actual breast area. Its disadavantages MAY be higher risk of implant migration. This means the implant may be displaced easily due to the placement used in this technique.

I say “MAY” because this common theory has not been proven yet, although it makes logical sense and does occur more frequently in patients with this type of insertion.

2.) Areolar (around the nipple) - This is becoming more popular as a method of augmentation due to low scar visibility. Although it may seem counterintuitive, the incision scar is barely visible on most women after completely healing due to the exceptional healing capacity of the particular skin around the nipple (the areola). So, although the incision occurs in a very obvious place on the breast, the scarring is so minimal that most women are very happy with the overall results when completely healed.

3.) Side or bottom of the breast - This is not as popular any more, since the scarring is often pretty obvious, and does not heal as quickly as areolar breast augmentations do. This type of incision is kind of fading out now that surgeons are coming up with newer and less visible techniques that look better and more natural.

What to Look For in a Surgeon for Breast Augementation

First off, make sure your surgeon is board certified by the ABPS, or American Board of Plastic Surgery. Do NOT always go with the cheapest. The cheapest surgeons are usually cheap for a reason. Breast implants are devices you will have for ten years if all goes well. It just isn’t worth saving a thousand dollars or so if you aren’t happy with the results. These will be with you for a long time!

If you’re looking for discounted surgery from reputable surgeons, there are some good websites that offer discounted prices through contracted surgeons that have agreed to offer a lower price when referred through these sites. Most times the discount is about $500.

Be sure you communicate to your surgeon the desired outcome of your surgery. For example, do you want more natural looking implants that hang lower like real breasts, and are not too big, or do you want higher, rounder and bigger breasts akin to the type seen on Playboy models or adult film actresses? It sounds silly, but there are people who desire both, and your doctor needs to know exactly what you want.

Finally, if you decide that surgery just isn’t for you, or that you really don’t want to risk looking fake or having harder breasts that just don’t feel like “you”, there are several natural options out there that will help you grow your own breast tissue gradually. Many women have done it successfully, and actually gained 1-3 cup sizes. The best part about this particular option is that it’s 100% YOU.

The Reign of Insanity
Friday 28 March 2008 @ 12:47 pm

I know you want to kill me, and I wish to do all I can to help you succeed.
Well… that would be insane, but what about this?

I know you want to kill my children, destroy my country, and erase all historical evidence of our existence, and I want to do everything I can to help you achieve your goals.

Would that be the epitome of insanity? If the leaders of your country were doing these things would you cry out “Treason”? That is exactly what is happening in Israel today, and Israeli’s are left stunned wondering what can be done to stop the insane leaders who have wrestled complete control over the government, military, and economy of Israel.

Ok… so I am going too far you say… another conspiracy nut.

American President George Bush says “I will bring peace to the Middle East”. Wait a minute… isn’t he supposed to be a Christian? Isn’t Jesus the only one who will ultimately bring peace to the Middle East? Isn’t the anti-Christ the one who will make a false peace agreement? Hmmm… think I am stretching a bit? It gets better.

The prophet Zechariah warned (Christians should be familiar with this, even Christian presidents) that those who burden themselves with Jerusalem will be dashed to pieces. Now a “Christian” president who presumably knows these scriptures, and proclaims a faith in the Jewish Messiah, and yet knowingly leads his nation into the abyss of certain condemnation at the hand of the God he swears he serves desperately needs his head examined. He must be insane!

Today in the British Parliament, the podium from which the Prime Minister speaks not only has a Bible resting upon it; it has a Koran resting on top of the Bible. Europe is fast becoming not only a post Christian group of nations, but a pro-Islamic group of nations as well. President Bush embraces Islam as a “peaceful” religion, and the State Department continues to appease and praise the Islamists openly. Did I miss something? Aren’t we supposed to be engaged in a worldwide war against terrorism? Has anyone else noticed that nearly every conflict in the world today, and nearly every terrorist act is perpetrated by Islam? The most notable exception might be the Irish Republican Army, but they are sympathetic to the Palestinians and have often cooperated on strategic training and planning. So if we are waging a war on terror, and we are at the same time doing all we can to appease the terrorist, couldn’t it be argued that we are suffering from mass dementia on a global scale?

I contend that to fight against God, Creator of All things, Master of everything, is tantamount to insanity. The world today, and the “leaders” governing us are at war with God. It is that simple, the flesh of man vs. the Holy Spirit of God. This is insanity at its apex. The world is going to suffer tremendously for this embracement of the devil, and the torment of this insanity will burn forever.

Thankfully, none of us have to be turned over to a reprobate mind, we can embrace God instead, love His truth, and surrender to His will. If you have detected in your life a hardening of the heart towards the things of God, I appeal to you to stoop where you are, and fall on your knees in repentance. God does not want that any man (or woman or child) should perish but that all would come to repentance.

Lets see… eternal love, goodness, kindness, joy, and fulfillment, or… eternal torment, separation from all that is good, burning, suffering, terrible fear, thirst… which one will I chose, which one will I choose?

in your e-zine to write about yourself or business. This

Enzymes
Friday 28 March 2008 @ 12:01 pm

Essentials of Enzymes

Enzymes work with your immune system to bring back your natural vitality. A wide array of these enzymes is absolutely essential to lead a robust, active life. Your body naturally produces its own supply of enzymes, but with age enzyme production slows and your supply dwindles.

Extensive clinical and scientific research has shown a very strong connection between aging, how the body manages inflammation, and how inflammation is linked to many chronic degenerative diseases. Enzymes rebalance your body’s inflammatory response, and fine-tune the repair processes necessary to recover from injury and disease.

For chronic aches and pains, most of us have learned to reach for an aspirin, ibuprofen or other over-the-counter drugs, despite the side effects. Aspirin can cause microscopic bleeding in the stomach, leading to ulcerations and other gastrointestinal problems. Ibuprofen can blur your vision, make your ears ring and, ironically, aggravate the headaches and swelling you’re trying to ease. And they don’t even fix the problem - they just cover it up. A small shift in thinking could help you avoid the aches and discomfort, and the painkillers that can cause long-term side effects.

Professional athletes and “weekend warriors” know that after an injury or muscle strain, damaged blood vessels cause swelling as a signal to the body to prevent further abuse. With adequate rest, the injury would normally heal, but who wants to wait? The sooner you can recover, the better.

No matter what the injury, your body requires increased quantities of enzymes. Many people suffer from a chronic “itis” - arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, sinusitis, tinnitus, prostatitis, cystitis, pancreatitis, ulcerative colitis, thrombophlebitis. They may also be exposed to “miracle-itis” - that is, the new so-called “miracle cures” that offer loads of hype but little help. Scientists may be on the verge of discovering miracles, but until then, we know of no magic bullet that can beat a good long-term nutritional strategy.

An all-natural approach to obtaining necessary antioxidants and anti-inflammatories, along with vitamins and 13 essential minerals necessary for metabolism, is through a new product called Via Viente.

Investing Psychology - Know Thyself
Friday 28 March 2008 @ 11:09 am

America will continue to be the land of opportunity and
regardless of what course our economy takes over the next few
years, it’s likely that investment opportunities will be
numerous and attractive. Companies driven by the ever increasing
advancements in technology will emerge, while older companies,
out of necessity, will come forth with new products. One
industry or another will enjoy a boom period relative to the
rest. And, of course there will be casualties - there always is.

For the astute investor there’s always opportunities to buy
investments (stocks, bonds, commodities, mutual funds, etc.)
before “the crowd” finds out and it’s already over-valued or to
buy a so-called “blue chip” temporarily out of favor, at a
depressed price.

In many instances, the differences between great rewards and
huge losses are subtle. However, before you can embark anew or
jump back into the game you must ask yourself several questions
wrapped into one.

They can be lonely questions because only you can answer them.
It involves not only how much money you feel comfortable
investing but it also takes into account the level of risk you
are comfortable with.

First, does your financial condition permit you to invest;
second, can you assume the current risk implicit in the markets;
and third, is the market a safe place for you to be. Let’s take
them one at a time.

Your Financial Position One point should be made clear at the
outset: you don’t have to be wealthy to invest. In the past,
insiders have trumped the belief that stock ownership is a rich
man’s game but with approximately 50% of american households
currently in the market that is no longer the case.

The goals of the small investor is not of enlarging their
fortune because clearly they currently don’t have one but to
make available some money, however small, for the purpose of
growing it over time. Regardless of your income level,
investment is possible if three conditions are met:

1. If you are relatively assured of a steady income. Of course,
these days nothing is set in stone. 2. If you are meeting your
current household expenses and obligations. 3. If you have cash
reserves with which to meet unforeseen emergencies. You have to
decide how much but I would suggest enough to cover 3 months of
living expenses.

Of course, these conditions are simply safeguards due to the
inescapable fact that stock prices fluctuate and that your
judgment of when to buy, when to sell and how long to hold
should never be dictated by outside circumstances. Investment
should be undertaken only with funds you can honestly and
legitimately earmarked as discretionary.

A reserve also enables you to pick and choose. Whether you have
a few hundred or a few thousand lying around should not
automatically mean that it’s time to invest it. What’s the
hurry? As the professionals say, “The market is always there.”
If the trend isn’t to your liking or price’s are over-valued a
reserve allows you the luxury of waiting for more favorable
conditions.

Finally, a reserve permits investment over a period of time
rather than all at once. Some “experts” feel you should back
what seems to be a good situation with all the investment funds
at your command. Others will warn against greed and advise
partial investment to spread the risk.

This article is not the place to discuss the merits of either
philosphy. The point is to give yourself the flexibility of
moving whatever way “your” judgment dictates.

Your Personal Situation Your age, health, the number of
dependents you support, the kind of job you have, or the type of
goals you have set for yourself are just a few of the possible
factors that will weigh into your investment decisions.
Unfortunately, there is no rule, no prescription, no secret
formula to follow.

The story is told of two salesmen who met at the airport. Their
conversation went something like this: “How’s business?” asked
the first. “Oh, very good,” said the second, “and yours?” “Fine,
fine,” said the first. “I got orders for a thousand gross last
week. I sell buttons.” “Really,” said the second. “I’ve had one
order in the last three years.” “and you call that good?” said
the first. “Actually yes,” said the second, “I sell suspension
bridges.”

Like the salesmen, the investor must have a clear notion of his
goals and expectations and they must realize what is normal and
acceptable to someone else might not be what is normal or
acceptable to them.

What Kind of Person You Are Consideration of your investment
goals brings up the final point of personal evaluation - You.
Very simply because your goals are a reflection of your
temperament and personality.

You must go beyond your goals and pin down the traits and
characteristics they stem from. Are your goals realistic? How do
you regard money? How do you handle it? Are you easy-come,
easy-go or do you count pennies? Are decisions involving money
difficult for you to make? Are you on top of your budget or
always running to keep up?

These are generalized questions and there are no absolute
answers. Speculators should stay out of the market, but on the
other hand, being a tight-wad is no virtue either. An overly
cautious or conservative temperament may not be well-suited to
react to the ever changing market conditions and thus miss out
on opportunities to sell or buy.

The value in knowing thyself and how you will likely respond in
a variety of financial situations is vital. Any personality type
can count profits but it requires a certain rigor, a certain
fortitude to face up to the adverse situations that investing
unveils. If you have a character flaw, losing money will quickly
expose it.

In a now famous pronouncement, the elder Morgan stared at a
questioner who wanted to know what stock prices would do and he
said, “They will fluctuate.” The statement is as pertinent today
as it was then. As a result, the question you must ask becomes,
“How will I respond when they do?” If you “Know Thyself” you’ll
have the answer.

This article may be reproduced only in its entirety.

Real Men Use Reel Mowers
Friday 28 March 2008 @ 4:30 am

Real men (and women) use reel lawn mowers. There are many benefits to using a reel lawn mower - namely, they are better for the environment than a rotary mower.

Here are some other benefits of reel mowers:

You just push it and it mows - you do not have to worry about starting up the lawn mower or having it break down on you.

They are quiet.

You can mow at any time of the day or night without worrying about waking up your neighbors. You can hear the birds chirping and your cell phone ringing and other sounds that you can not hear when pushing a rotary mower.

You can actually enjoy a beautiful day, noise-free, when you are out pushing a reel mower - mowing your lawn becomes less of a task and more of an enjoyment.

They are less expensive than rotary mowers - they cost less to purchase and less to maintain, and you do not have to pay for gas to fuel them.

Low maintenance - you just need to periodically oil your lawn mower and sharpen the blade.

You can get a bit of exercise when you are out mowing the lawn! Of course, do not worry. Reel mowers of today are much easier to push and use than those that your grandfather owned. They are lighter and easier to maintain than those of the past, as well.

A reel mower is light enough and small enough to lift up and stow away on a wall in your garage.

Because the blades of a reel mower spin at an angle perpendicular to the ground (the blades of a rotary mower spin parallel to the ground), they actually cut the grass rather than simply smashing the ends of the grass.

They are generally safer than rotary lawn mowers.

They do not pollute!

Drawbacks of reel mowers:

They do not cut tall weeds very well. In other words, they are not going to be very useful for cutting the grass of a vacant lot, but they will still work great on your lawn. A reel mower will just roll right over dandelions and other weeds

For them to work best, you need to use them weekly. Tall grass can really bog them down, and cutting it will give you more of a workout than you are looking for!

Because you are, in a sense, the motor that keeps this type of lawn mower going, you may get too tired if you have a large lawn to tackle - reel mowers are best for smaller lawns.

They do not break up sticks like a rotary motor. In fact, you may have to stop and get sticks out of the blade.

In the end, the choice is, of course, up to you. But realize that a reel mower is most definitely a lawn mower option that should not be so easily overlooked!
