***Inspiration and Motivation will Overcome Anything***
Wednesday 30 April 2008 @ 10:24 pm

I have a heart warming success story. You all know how I
believe that we can succeed in what we do if we decide to do it
and ‘take action’. Each week when I write the bulletin I have to
take action and sometimes there is no inspiration. So what do I
do? I take action, look for inspiration and think what I can
write. I get my inspiration from newspapers, journals and
conversations etc. It seems when my brain is alerted to the need
something comes to me.

My inspiration has just arrived, as it always does. This time by
reading an article in my local paper. This is a true article
about a young man called Mark. Mark has for most of his life
worked at jobs in the manual trade. Recently he suffered a bout
of ill health that prevented him from working. He was advised
that he may never work again.

He spent some time talking with local information and advice
workers and they jointly came up with a plan of action.

Reading and writing are a struggle for Mark because he is
dyslexic. So he decided to ‘get to grips with using computers’.
He successfully completed courses in word processing and spread
sheets. In his spare time he did a First Aid and Health and
Safety course.

Now it gets more inspirational.

Here is a young man taking action to improve himself after being
told he may never work again. In the process of completing his
studies he was so helpful to other students that it was
suggested he might like to take a qualification in teaching
adults. Which he did and passed.

It gets better!

Mark’s confidence and self esteem is now such that he is
employed by THREE organisations. One as a ‘learning support
worker’, one as a ‘learning assistant’ at a junior school, and
also as a ‘community Information Technology tutor’.

I am moved by this true story because it shows yet again what
the human spirit can achieve if we let it. By his positive
action Mark has created a future for himself and he is helping
others in the process. Truly inspirational!

Tip: Those who ‘get there’ do so through their own achievements,
not through their dreams.

Mustard: The Greatest Among The Herbs
Wednesday 30 April 2008 @ 9:49 pm

Mustard plants have been used for thousands of years for their pungent flavour in condiments, spicy greens for side dishes and salads, and in traditional folk medicine and Chinese herbal medicine to treat a variety of ailments. The name mustard comes from the Latin mustum ardens, or “burning must.” It was so named because as the seeds were pounded with unfermented grape juice, or must, their pungent qualities developed, hence “burning.” Mustards seeds are mentioned in ancient Sanskrit writings dating back about 5,000 years ago and the Bible calls mustard “the greatest among the herbs.” Valued for their intense flavours and healing properties, mustard seed and the plant itself have been grown for its beautiful yellow flowers and spicy seedling leaves. Members of the Brassicaceae family, mustard is a cruciferous vegetable related to cabbage, Brussel sprouts, kale, kohlrabi, Chinese cabbage, cauliflower, rutabagas, turnips, radishes, horseradish, cress, and broccoli with the attendant phytochemicals properties.

Mustard is categorised as a food, medicine, spice, and condiment. White mustard (Sinapis alba) also known as yellow mustard is a native of North Africa, central Asia, and the Mediterranean. This is the mustard that is used extensively in the production of American prepared mustards, as it is the least pungent. Brown mustard (Brassica juncea) is native to Asia and is the seed used to prepare specialty mustards such as Dijon. Canada is the world’s largest exporter of mustard seed and among the top five producers in the world. Saskatchewan produces over 80% of the domestic total and the brown mustard seed used for Dijon mustard comes from Saskatchewan.

Mustard seeds contain many healing properties and have been used for centuries by Chinese herbalists to treat abscesses, bronchitis, colds, rheumatism, toothache, ulcers, and stomach disorders. They are an excellent source of monounsaturated fats, phosphorous, and a good source of iron, calcium, zinc, magnesium, and manganese. Mustard seeds have been shown to help reduce the severity of asthma, decrease some of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, and help prevent cancer. Mustard plasters are still being used today to treat rheumatism, arthritis, chest congestion, aching back, and sore muscles. To make a mustard plaster, mix equal parts powered mustard and wheat flour, dilute the mixture with sufficient cold water to achieve a soft paste. Spread on a clean cloth such as cotton flannel, linen, or several layers of muslin. Remember that mustard is a hot herb and contact with the skin may cause blistering and should be avoided. Leave on for approximately 15 minutes. If the patient complains at any time during treatment, remove the plaster immediately. After the plaster is removed, bathe the treated area with cool (not cold) water to stop the burn. Dry the area and finish up with a dusting of baby powder or cornstarch to soothe the skin.

Mustard greens are the leaves of the mustard plant Brassica juncea. Mustard greens originated in the Himalayan region of India and have been grown and consumed for more than 5,000 years. All young mustard leaves can be used for mustard greens, however Chinese mustards or mustard greens (Brassica juncea var. rugosa), broad-leaved mustard greens, or (Brassica juncea var. foliosa), thin-leaved mustard greens, are the best mustards for greens. These varieties are also known as gai choy, Indian mustard, leaf mustard, mustard cabbage, Bamboo mustard cabbage, and Sow cabbage. Mustard greens are a staple vegetable in many cultures around the world. They are used much as spinach, dandelion, or beet greens are used (see recipe for Sautéed Mustard Greens).

Mustard greens are an excellent source of vitamin E, vitamin C, and beta-carotene. They also contain vitamin B6, folic acid, magnesium, calcium, iron, niacin, vitamin A, and are an excellent source of phytochemicals thought to prevent cancer. In Chinese herbal medicine, mustard greens are used to treat bladder inflammations and to stop hemorrhage. Eating mustard greens is thought to offer great benefit to individuals suffering from conditions ranging from asthma to heart disease to menopausal symptoms.

Mustards are annuals and grow from 2-4 feet (60-120 cm) tall. The flowers produced are yellow and the white mustard flowers have a slight vanilla scent. They are known as cruciferous plants because they have four-petaled flowers, two long and two short that resemble a cross. Both mustards have pungent-flavoured, broad, dark green, jagged with irregularly cut lower leaves. Mustard is a cool season crop and bolts quickly in warm weather.

Mustards can be started indoors or planted directly into the soil in early spring. If you are starting mustards indoors, adequate light is essential. Hang lights 3 inches (7.5 cm) above the seedlings and leave lights on for 16 hours a day. They prefer a rich, moist, well-prepared soil with adequate drainage. Plant seeds at a depth of inch (6 mm) and follow directions on the seed packet. They grow best in full sun and need to be kept moist during the growing season. Space mustards 6 inches (15 cm) apart. Harvest your mustard plants for greens when the leaves are young and tender, for cooked greens when the leaves are mature, and for seed when the seedpods take on a brownish tinge.

In the kitchen, whole mustard seeds are used in sauerkraut, cabbage, pickles, relishes, curries, sauces, pot roasts, and to flavour meats such as lamb, pork, and rabbit. Use fresh flowers as an edible garnish or cook flowers for 2-3 minutes in boiling salted water. Drain and serve with butter and sea salt to taste. Mustard seeds can be sprouted and used in salads, sandwiches, or as a garnish. Young mustard greens are great additions to salads and stir-fry dishes. To make your own mustard condiment, grind, crack, or crush the mustard seeds. Macerate the seeds in wine, vinegar, or water. Make sure the liquid is cold as this causes the chemical reaction that releases the heat and pungency of the seed. Grind them into a smooth paste, adding herbs and spices such as tarragon, horseradish, crushed hot peppers, turmeric, garlic, pepper, paprika, ginger, or hot pepper sauce. Additional options are honey, dark ale, beer, whiskey, wine, wine vinegar, Scotch, or brown sugar. Fruit mustards are made with lemon, lime, orange, or berries. (If you don’t want to bother with grinding your own seed, start with mustard powder or use your favourite prepared mustard and add whatever additions you like.) Prepared mustard is used in vinaigrettes, marinades for meats, poultry, and seafood, mayonnaise, salad dressings, sauces, soups, and stews (see recipe for Basic Mustard.) Prepared mustards get their intense yellow colour from the addition of turmeric.

Basic Mustard

cup (125 mL) ground mustard seeds

cup (50 mL) ice cold water

cup (50 mL) vinegar (white, wine, cider)

2 Tbsp. (30 mL) sugar (to taste)

Grind, crush, or crack mustard seeds. Add the water to the ground mustard and stir. Let sit for 30 minutes in the refrigerator, then add remaining ingredients and blend. If you wish, add herbs or substitute wine for some of the vinegar. Pour into sterilised jars to seal. Refrigerate mustard.

Sautéed Mustard Greens

tsp. (2 mL) olive oil

1 clove garlic, minced

1 small onion, chopped

1 lg. bunch mustard greens

Wash mustard greens well, dry, and remove coarse stems. Chop stems into small pieces and leaves into 3 inch (7.5 cm) pieces. In a large skillet, heat olive oil on medium, add onions and garlic and stir-fry until onions are wilted. Add stem pieces, small amount of water, and place lid on skillet. Cook for a few minutes until stems are slightly tender. Add leaves and sauté until all liquid has evaporated and greens are tender. Season with sea salt or soya sauce and serve immediately.

This recipe can be used for other greens such as spinach, Swiss chard, dandelions, and beets.

Email Signatures as a Marketing Tool
Wednesday 30 April 2008 @ 7:37 am

Do your emails include a signature? A signature is a standard block of text you include in each of your outgoing email messages and postings to newsgroups. Most email programs (including Eudora, Outlook and others) allow you to create a signature file which will automatically appear at the end of every message you send. Look under the “Tools” menu or search the “Help” function in your email program to learn how to do this.

Use your signature to let others know what you do and how to contact you. For example, here is one signature I use:

Cathy Stucker, The Idea Lady
Attract Customers and Make Yourself Famous
Get a FREE marketing strategy every Tuesday in Bright Ideas
Subscribe at: http://www.IdeaLady.com/bright.htm
Mailto:email@site.com

Keep your signature file to no more than seven or eight lines. You can’t tell your whole life story, just give the basics of who you are and how to contact you.

You may include your business or product name, URL, phone number, address or other information. I often use my signature to promote my newsletter, but you might focus on one of your products or services, a special feature of your website, or other benefit you offer.

Keep it simple. Don’t use elaborate HTML in your signature. Many mail programs won’t read it properly, and recipients will see a jumbled mess of codes instead of your beautifully formatted message.

Do put any URLs in your message in this format: http://www.sitename.com/ Most email programs will read the URL as a hotlink, making it easy for readers to click through to your site. You can also make your email address a hotlink by entering it as mailto:email@sitename.com.

This is a strategy you can implement today. It’s easy, it’s free and it really works.

Wanna Trade Places?
Wednesday 30 April 2008 @ 7:08 am

Even immediately after my car accident, every single person who saw me was pleasantly shocked at how “great” I looked. Funny how much a little concealer and a new hair style can
make anyone look fabulous.

One of my physicians confidently told me “there’s no ‘look’ for pain”. This wise woman also said “you can’t see muscular or neurological damage”.

Going through physical and neurological (inner ear disorder) therapy for months, I was in awe by anyone with broken bones. I constantly saw quicker recoveries for people with pins in their legs.

I also often wished for a pain in my butt, because I was sick of it being in my back, shoulder, knee, and head. And now, I found out that I may have joint problems too…yipee.

Anyways, I took my compliments pleasantly, and politely reminded them NOT to judge a book by its cover, even good ones.

Whenever I tried to wean into work, the effort to make myself presentable for a couple of hours with a crowded room filled with people was extremely difficult. Walking through noisy crowds gave me motion sickness. Unfortunately, the compliments often turned into “you look and sound GREAT” with a huff and a puff.

So, my constant rebuttal was “Wanna trade places?” with a smirk. They rarely asked for details, and assumed my life was just fine.

Yeah, writing my book “Empowering Women to Power Network” was fulfilling one of my dreams, but promoting it is a whole job in and of itself…something I’m not fully able to handle right now.

Hey, and you’re also right: I’m living my other dream of homsechooling my girls too (thanks for remembering).

Just so you know even up to this very day, my husband and I find new ways to vertigo-safety our house so I don’t faint or pass-out when I’m home alone with the girls. Our four-year old knows how to call 911, report our address, and use a cell phone…just in case.

Do I want sympathy? No way!

My point: I don’t wanna trade places with anyone.

So, I stopped asking that question when I realized I was just fueling sarcasm with more sarcasm. No doubt, I’ve always been a very sarcastic person, but to joke around may be fine…to pass judgment is not.

I don’t give a darn what people may think, because I have enough to worry about. Can you imagine not sitting too long in a chair because of back pain, or not standing too long because of your knee? Pretty annoying, huh?

But, I’m grateful for these conditions.

Consider some of these women who are within my own sphere
of influence:

- Having clinical depression that she would cry all day and night, be insomniac, paranoid, and can not physically get out of bed for days at a time.

- Having a restraining order against her hope-to-be X-husband for herself and three children because he abused them. She lives in fear and worry for all their safety.

- Being 35 years old and experiencing a car accident that only broke her hips, and then the day she was supposed to come home she died. Survived by this tragedy are her husband and four children: the youngest is three and oldest 14 years old.

All of this happened during my recovery these past eight months.

Do I feel blessed? You betcha.

No matter what you may see or feel about another person, just think: “Would you wanna trade places with that person when you have NO idea what their situation really is right now!?”

My answer is “No Way”, how ’bout you?

I didn’t think so.

Home Interior Decoration
Wednesday 30 April 2008 @ 5:46 am

Home Interior Decoration - The process of decorating a home in
order to make it look good becomes easier to use and gels well
with the architecture. Home interior decoration provides a
certain “feel” to the home; it includes applying wallpaper,
painting the walls, choosing of furniture and fittings such as
light fixtures, and adding decorations such as paintings.

Home interior decoration is professionally done by interior
designers/ decorators and also by a few architects. There is a
distinctive difference between home interior decoration and
interior design.

Home interior decoration is focused on finishing, such as
wallpaper, window covering, furnishings and paint. Interior
design is more integrated with the architecture, and in addition
to home interior decoration involves cabinet making, room layout
etc and host of other design parameters that go into making a
home.

Although the concept of home interior decoration evolved in
Paris and London in the late 18th century, modern home interior
decoration began with Jeanselme in Paris, Lenygon and Morant in
London and Ogden Codman from New York. This concept of home
interior decoration has gone through many trends and
discussions. The current trends of this industry is to discover
innovative ways to decorate on a budget mostly shoe string.

The whole objective of home interior decoration is to
functionally improve the home and make it reflect your tastes
and personality at the same time rendering it unique. A big
challenge, nevertheless, undertaken by artistic scientists.

Homeowners spent approximately $175 billion in the year 2003 to
improve their homes. About 65% of this can be attributed to home
interior decoration. The new trends indicate most spending on
expanding kitchens and livening up bathrooms with new fittings.
Current trends also indicate that emphasis is being given to
creating specialty rooms and areas for individual members of the
family. Growing in popularity are massage suites, spa areas,
media space, craft rooms, wine cellars and home library areas.
Even though luxury is a synonym for space, most small home
owners are eagerly using home interior decoration to create
definition areas for each individual.

Colors are also undergoing a new preference towards earthly,
natural and warm brown tones from the vibrant and loud colors of
the past. Blue and gray hues are preferred today over dull reds
and dark blues of the past.

Innovative home interior decoration ideas, which cost less but
at the same time giving the impression of an ornate design
scheme are in vogue for new career professionals and newly
married couples.

The new trend of Life-styling has given home interior decoration
industry a boost. This has given rise to eclectic decorating
styles which include High Tech and Shabby Chic replacing the
good old Victorian or Early American.

Focus has changed to harmony and function compared to uniqueness
and good looking. Rightly so, since uniqueness can never be 100%
and neatness has always been good looking, which can be brought
about by good functionality.

Home interior decoration has changed more drastically over the
past 15 years or so than in its long history. Keeping track of
new trends is almost as essential as for a computer professional
keeping track of new software or hardware.

Arthritis & Joint Health
Wednesday 30 April 2008 @ 4:51 am

Many millions of people are affected by pain and suffering from Arthritis and research has shown that Glucosamine and Chondroitin sulphates combined have given these people new hope and relief from their painful ailments. Arthritis it causes pain, stiffness and sometimes swelling in or around joints. This can make it hard to complete simple movements you rely on every day for work or taking care of your family. But you can take steps now to avoid arthritis or to reduce pain and resume normal daily activities.

There are more than 100 different types of arthritis and the cause of most types is unknown. Scientists are currently studying what roles three major factors play in certain types of arthritis. These include the genetic factors you inherit from your parents, events which occur during your life and how you live on a day-to-day basis. The importance of these factors varies by type of arthritis.

Even though there is a lot of mystery surrounding arthritic joint pain, there is also a tremendous amount of research that points to certain nutrients that help nutritionally support this condition.

Both short and long term studies have been performed with a nutrient called Glucosamine Sulfate. Glucosamine works to stimulate joint function and repair. It is most effective in treating osteoarthritis, the most prevalent form of arthritis. A number of studies over the last 20 years have shown this to be true. For example, a 1982 clinical study compared usage of the NSAID ibuprofen with glucosamine sulfate, for osteoarthritis of the knee. The over-all results showed that 44% of the glucosamine group had pain relief compared to 15% for ibuprofen.

A long-term effects study was done with glucosamine and arthritis reported in the Lancet. the authors concluded that, “Glucosamine sulfate prevents the progression of osteoarthritis of the knee, in addition to relieving the symptoms.”
The health supplements carry by StarHerb for Arthritic and Joint Pain not only contain all of these nutrients; it utilizes the exact forms that were shown in the studies to be effective. The forms which are the best to look for are:

Baby Sleep Tips and Trick
Wednesday 30 April 2008 @ 3:11 am

This article was written to answer many of the most frequently
asked questions on this topic. I hope you find all of this
information helpful. As a new parent, one of your priorities
will be to establish good sleeping habits with your baby. Your
baby needs to learn to sleep on his own; the transition from
sleeping with his mother to sleeping by himself takes some time.
Of course, as add added bonus, if you get your baby to learn to
sleep on his own you will also get some much needed rest
yourself. To instill good sleeping habits in your baby, research
and try to employ different baby sleep tips: try a lot of things
and see what works for you, and don\’t be afraid to trust your
instincts. Don\’t bite off more than you can chew

Many baby sleep tips center on the idea of establishing routines
and associations for your child between nighttime and sleep. The
sooner you child begins to associate bedtime with sleep, the
more likely he is to be able to go to sleep without a fuss. A
period that is often overlooked, however, in establishing day
vs. night associations, is the period of \”transition\” - that
is, the one between being awake and falling asleep. Here are
some transitioning techniques to try:

Try what is sometimes called \”fathering down.\” Just before
placing the baby into bed, the father should cradle the baby in
such a way that the baby\’s head rests on the father neck. The
father should then talk gently to the child. Because the male\’s
voice is much deeper than the female\’s, babies are often more
soothed by it, and will fall asleep more easily after being
exposed to it for some time.

You can also try what is sometimes referred to as \”wearing
down.\” This is effective if your baby has been active
throughout the day and is too excited to go to bed easily. All
you have to do is place your baby in a sling or carrier - \”wear
him\” in other words - for about half an hour before his
bedtime. Simply go about your regular household activities:
being close to a parent and slowly rocked about before bedtime
will provide your child with an easier transition from being
awake to being asleep.

Finally, if you\’ve exhausted other options, you can go for the
tried and true method of \”driving down.\” Most parents are
probably familiar with this as a last resort: place your baby in
the car and drive around for awhile until he falls asleep. This
one, while inconvenient, usually works every time, and if you
desperately need some sleep it can be a godsend.

Obviously, you don\’t want to do things like drive around every
night to get your child to sleep. Nor do you want to have to
carry him around in a sling. The idea, though, is to start with
these more drastic techniques and then slowly ease out of them.
Keep in mind what a major transition your baby is going through
when he is tiny: he\’s never slept on his own before. He simply
doesn\’t know how to transition himself from being awake to
being asleep. By employing these transition techniques you will
be slowly teaching him how to do so, and as they are gradually
removed your baby will learn good sleeping habits, which will
ensure that both you and your child get a good night\’s rest.

Thanks for visiting and finding my baby sleep article. What
you\’ve just read was information that I have pulled together
from many different sources. I hope you fiound it both
interesting and helpful.

Student Loan Options For Financing Your Education
Monday 28 April 2008 @ 4:38 pm

When you begin applying for colleges, you will find that tuition and boarding fees are extremely expensive. Unless they are independently wealthy, few people can pay for college outright. If you do not qualify for scholarships, financing your education can seem virtually impossible, even with the help of regular financial aid grants. However, there are many low interest student loans available for students that qualify for them. Rather than putting off your education, you can borrow money and defer payment until your have graduated and have found a full-time job with which you can pay back what you owe.

The first step toward applying for student loans is to fill out a financial aid application form called the Federal Application for Student Financial Aid. Once you have been accepted to a college or university, you will be sent a packet of financial aid information. You will be asked to provide your own and your parents financial information so the aid agency can assess your need and your ability to pay. There are many government based grants, like the Pell Grant, that give money to low-income students and their families with no obligation to ever pay it back. However, grants can only pay for so much, and you will most likely require student loans to finance the rest of your educational expenses.

If the free financial aid you qualify for is not enough to cover your expenses, student loans can help you make it through college to get the degree you need to be financially successful later in life. There are many different types of student loans available for both conventional and nontraditional students. Federal education loans like Perkins and Stafford Loans can be funded by either the school, your bank, or by the U.S. Department of Education. Private education loans are not sponsored by the government and draw funds from a variety of different sources. If you are still considered a dependent, either you or your parents can apply for student loans to finance your education.

Guaranteed Student Loans, or Stafford Loans, typically have lower interest rates than private loans. These loans are guaranteed by the federal government, and they can be subsidized or unsubsidized. If you have a subsidized loan, the government pays your interest while you are in school. With an unsubsidized loan, you begin accruing interest while you are in school, but you do not have to pay it back until you have graduated. You must show financial need to obtain a subsidized loan, whereas unsubsidized loans are available to anyone who applies.

Often times, Direct Student Loans are the loan of choice for many students. Direct loans are handled directly by the school you are attending. These types of loans typically have lower interest rates than most others. Your college or university may obtain the funds from a variety of sources, but all of the payments are generally made to the school itself. Once you are finished with school, you typically have anywhere from six to nine months to begin paying back your accrued debt.

If you finish school and cannot afford to pay back your student loans, they may be placed in default. This affects your credit rating and can keep you from getting other loans in the future. You can be granted a deferment on your loans if you decide to continue your schooling in graduate studies, or if you are unemployed. Deferment, however, does not last forever. If you have many different student loans, you can often consolidate them using a consolidation service, or, if you have direct loans, you can consolidate through your schools lender.
