Queens and Crescents - Book Review
Tuesday 8 April 2008 @ 10:42 pm

What certainly stood out for me in Barry Southers novel,
Queens and Crescents, was his strong and deep feelings
for his family that Barry made apparent in the dedication for
this book. The love and appreciation he shares here is
actually quite touching. The introduction does a good job of
setting up the book through a discussion of happiness and
success in today’s society.

Readers will find plenty of action and suspense in this
murder romance novel. The main character here is Sean
Martinez, a 28-year-old divorcee who works a mundane
position in a mortgage broker firm. For Sean, life is just one
day blending into the next. He just could not get over his wife
leaving three years ago with her old lover. If there were a
need for an example of a man in dire need of a vacation,
Sean would be chosen.

Spurred on by a radio commercial one excruciatingly hot
day, Sean’s vacation destination is decided for him. There,
he finds true love, fascinating passion and discovers the
power of intuition and fate. Cruel crime lords fighting for
position, bloodcurdling hired killers and a heavy loss bring
Sean back into living life for what it is.

I was impressed with Barry’s writing style because I could
really picture the scenes in my head. I felt he delved deeply
into the psyche of his characters, making them seem much
more real than many authors are able to do. Queens and
Crescents may take readers only a day or two to read, but
the characters will remain alive in their minds for a number
of days.

The Previous Investment Trap
Tuesday 8 April 2008 @ 4:57 pm

You are in the previous investment trap when your bright idea goes south and you have so much invested you refuse to walk away, squandering additional time, money and effort on a salvage operation that will more than likely fail worse than the original idea. A business, a marriage, a purchase, a hobby - the trap is the same.

Iraq is a previous investment trap. The investment of political capital, money and blood for what began as a bad idea, carried on into a subsequent administration as a salvage operation. A man took it upon himself to wager the future of the world on a personal desire and ambition. He cannot say he was wrong and more than 500 leaders have stood behind him to one degree or another. Men and women of no higher moral character than the one who declares that people must die for his political dreams and objectives. To create a new and bankrupt world in accordance with his personal vision. Did I hear you say he of all people has the right? Who asked you? Who asks you about anything in this fine democracy?

Do you write letters to representatives who likely never see them and aides who are glad few people think like you? Maybe you too are in the previous investment trap, investing time, money and effort in ambitious ego maniacs obsessed by career and delusions of power.

Yet, the question is not who is to blame, the question is how to stop additional investment. The moral issues now fog the politics and economics. The first step in extraction is to tune out those who insist we must continue to salvage a bad investment, that no life has been lost in vain. That no injury has been sustained in vain. That no money spent or effort made in vain. So the losses mount as we are assured there is NO WAY OUT save continued investment. Does this not sound like a gambling addiction? This is why it is called the previous investment trap. A trap with no way out is like unto Guantanamo Bay where American Justice triumphs over evil. We might as well all hang ourselves, for there is no hope.

Why was Al Qaeda assisted in their escape from Konduz, Afghanistan in November, 2001 and later at Tora Bora only to lock up hundreds not Al Qaeda indefinitely in Cuba? Do you suppose deals are being struck, we know nothing about? Is it possible George Bush and Osama Bin Laden are on the same team? Heaven forbid huh? If it is an unproven fact, nobody wants it proven. Nobody wants it to be a fact. Good way to do abracadabra. “Watch closely while I secretly change the world before your very eyes.”

The way out is to announce your withdrawal and let the rest of the world step in and clean up a mess they refused to prevent. Americans are not alone in this mess and we can find other ways to assist our replacements or whoever is assisting the Iraqi people. But then, one man has sworn an oath saying that will never happen. America will stand with warring Iraqis come hell or high water. What man has the right to swear such an oath or the power to enforce it? Ignore him. He only imagines such things. An actor on a global stage, directing the play. Israel has paved the way to unilateral withdrawal as the U.S. has paved the way to preemptive strikes.

The ship of state is going down. Loyal Americans intend to go down with it because they are convinced there is no way out. Prayer, meditation, peace practices, the U.S. Peace Department, promised in the 2003 presidential election campaign, campaign finance reform - all offering no hope, no way out. The previous investment trap has become the American way, approved by the wisdom of majority. If you have hope, you might be un American - and you might have a future.

Belgian Malinois - Protector of Home, Family and Livestock
Tuesday 8 April 2008 @ 1:50 am

The Belgian Malinois is a medium/large size dog that weighs between 40-80 lbs and is between 22″ to 26″ in height. Their name is pronounced MAL-in-wah. They are one of four Belgian Sheepdogs and are very work oriented and are protective of home, family and livestock.

The AKC recognizes the Belgian Malinois in the colors of fawn to mahogany to red with a black mask, ears and tips. Minimal white on the chest and feet is permitted. The short, smooth, straight and hard outer coat and dense undercoat require minimal grooming and are very easy to care for. Regular washing is not recommended as their coat has water proofing.

This intelligent, energetic, protective breed is still more of a working dog than companion. They have a strong drive to work. The Belgian Malinois makes an excellent farm dog, watchdog, police dog and herding dog because of their instinct to protect their family, home or whatever else they are trained to protect. They can make a great family pet as well. Early socialization is a must for children, other dogs and pets. In fact, they do best if they are socialized from the time they are born. They can be dominant towards other dogs. Early, consistent, firm but not harsh training is important. They are harder for a novice to train than someone who is more experienced. The Belgian Malinois has a lot of energy and loves to be on the go. They require a yard and plenty of room to run and play. They are not meant to be indoors all day. They enjoy being with their family and are not meant to be left alone for long periods of time as they will get bored and find some way to fill their time.

Originating in Belgium, the Belgian Malinois is one of four Belgian Sheepdogs. Their name comes from the Belgian city of Malines. It is recognize as its own breed by the AKC however, in some countries, all four Belgian Sheepdogs are considered to be one breed. The Belgian Malinois is popular in Belgium and is used for herding, police work and as a search and rescue dog.

A breed with such a strong work drive, protective instinct and high energy makes an excellent watchdog and farm dog. They do best with families that are active and will meet their work and exercise needs. An active, busy Belgian Malinois is a happy Belgian Malinois.
