Beta Carotene’s Benefits In Human Health
Friday 29 August 2008 @ 1:44 am

Beta Carotene is a carotenoid . Carotenoids are light absorbing pigments occurring in plants and animals. Beta carotene stores light in plant leaves during the process of photosynthesis. Found in many plants including asparagus, apricots, broccoli, carrots, kale, pumpkins, sweet potatoes and tomatoes; it can easily be added to the diet naturally.

This carotenoid can absorb light wavelengths that evade chlorophyll. This can help to increase the range of usable light waves during photosynthesis. It also helps the plant reach for the light unless the light is too severe then it sends the plant growing into the opposite direction.

In the human body beta carotene through a series of conversions joins with opsin, the red pigment of the retina to make rhodopsin which is necessary for night vision. Rhodopsin is also called visual purple and it is the substance in the back of the eye that is responsible for the first steps in light recognition. Beta carotene may also serve as a cofactor in enzyme systems. These serve the enzyme in its catalyst
functions.

The human body converts every one beta carotene molecule into two
vitamin A molecules which are stored in the liver. People on average store a two year supply of this vitamin in the body. There are some vitamins which need to be replenished on a daily basis because they are not stored in the body. By contrast vitamin A is to be supplemented only with great caution because of the potential risk of overdose.

Beta Carotene not only helps with night vision, it aids in the treatment of some eye disorders. It helps to promote bone growth and teeth development and aids in the reproduction process Beta Carotene helps us to maintain healthy skin, hair and mucous membranes. It also builds the body’s resistances to infections, especially respiratory as it is an antioxidant and helps to remove free moving radicals in the body. Its thought to help prevent acne, impetigo, boils and open ulcers when applied to the skin. The symptoms of Beta Carotene deficiency are Night
blindness, inability to create tears, subtle changes in the eyes,
xeroderma, weight loss, poor bone growth, weakened tooth enamel,
diarrhea, acne, insomnia or fatigue.

It will take several months of a Beta Carotene deficient diet before symptoms will begin to develop so don’t be concerned about a few days without eating carrots. Also don’t take beta carotene if you are allergic to Vitamin A. If you are pregnant do not take doses of Vitamin A larger than the Daily Value as it can cause growth retardation and urinary tract malformations in the fetus. Similarly don’t take doses higher than the daily value if you are breastfeeding.

Irrational Exuberance of the Dot Com Days Discussed
Sunday 24 August 2008 @ 10:49 pm

It is hard to disagree that there was much irrational exuberance during the Dot Com run-up. Some of the money that flowed into investments for companies with little more than an idea for the Internet or a program that should have ended up Freeware because quite frankly that was all it was really worth, ended up funded with millions in venture capital on their way to a public offering.

Many have said including recently an employee for Deloitte that; “Everyone loves the free market until the following things happen: One: They find they can’t compete because of their own miscalculations and get jealous. Two: The questionable investment endeavors they participated in go from hot to not.”

Indeed this is hard to debate, as we have seen many examples of this and we see this in many other aspects of life; Indeed, as long as you are winning everyone loves you and those who cannot compete honestly look for ways to cheat. This is why we have referees in Sports.

Many a regulator or detractor of free markets will point out one or two folks which have fraudulently used the free market to defraud investors and they will point out those as an example of the need for over regulation. Out employee for Deloitte also has words to say on this; “Every one loved the entrepreneurial spirit and the Greenspanian “Irrational Exuberance,” - which is what it was - until people such as Frank Quattrone got exposed for what they really were: boosters, prospectors, speculators.”

When a regulator who is wet behind the ears, a graduating college student brainwashed in liberal academia or a man who makes his money in accounting and overseeing such industries takes this viewpoint in their infinite wisdom and perception, they so often fail to realize what commerce is. Free enterprise is without unnecessary barriers to trade, that regulators promote, lawyers make money on and regulators are employed to oversee. However it is true we did see some major hype going on during the dot com days. Lets take a look at the WebVan example, a billion dollars lost. Who was running the company? The former CEO of Arthur Anderson, yes an accounting firm; it is interesting that behind every single major fraud there is a bean counter. Who is regulating the regulators, lawyers and bean counters who have hijacked free enterprise? In the WebVan example one of their VC supporters funded a PR firm, which hyped WebVan, convenient indeed? So yes, one must agree that things did get a little over blown. But also the FTC went after every .DotCom they could find starting investigations. They had clipboards hanging on the doorways of the FTC offices with pages and pages of .Dotcom targets. How do I know? I saw them. Same with the SEC, because the complainers, the old Dow Stocks and Companies, were not getting the support from short term investors in their stocks, so they used the government to attack the .Dotcoms.

Immediately we had all the so called .DotCom rule breakers getting pummeled by the in-efficient dinosaur rule makers, which did not want to dump their own bureaucracy and innovate. The larger companies using court system, political style tactics and BS hype on the other side by those who labeled the .DotComs as fraudsters, some were, I suppose, but the government attacks were vast and poorly profiled, they just created cases out of thin air.

This is typical, but it was incompetent and corrupt government regulators who intervened rather than larger old companies getting lean and mean to compete in the future efficiencies of the net. GE and other companies, which embraced it; IE - setting up vendor bidding auctions, etc. Do business with us online, saw efficiencies and seized the day. We saw quite a few newbie dot coms coming into our markets and trying to get between my company and my customer. Like the Travel.coms, so I modified my company’s image to the customer to perceive they could do business direct with me the same way. We even went so far as to get between our competitors customers and them for a fee? Selling them their own customers. You know one thing people do not realize is the .COM boon was more about virtual turf than anything else. The hype was shown up and it was crumbling only a few companies were making money riding on the “_ _ _ _Soft” type names. There were so many VC, first public offerings going on and it was silly, watching 7-10 of these every day at the NASDAQ. But some folks got filthy rich and today although we had the .com burst, which reminded markets and investors of reality for reality sake, it was inevitable. More investors who were long-term retirement investors should have heeded the warnings of Warren Buffet, they did not, so they got stung. We did much business in San Jose, Santa Clara, Palo Alto, San Carlos, South San Francisco, Foster City, Mountain View, Pleasanton, Danville, Walnut Creek, Sunnyvale, Milpitas and Cupertino. Money flowed like water, we were constantly scraping for labor and everyone was paying $10.00 for a hamburger, $1500 for single bedroom apartment and $500,000 for a single family dwelling-shack. Our customers started moving to middle class neighborhoods in Manteca, Turlock and other god forsaken places, commuting hours just to find a home, so we washed their cars at work; www.carwashguys.com . But the same thing is happening now around DC, look at the suburbs their, traffic on the beltway, mixing bowl. Heck it is a free parking lot like San Jose before all the Expressways went thru.

We still see mini-Irrational exuberance in the Boston Subs, Atlanta Subs, Dallas Subs and in Austin, San Diego, Denver and Chicago Subs. We saw lots of things and we are seeing some of this today. And again everyone in the Venture Capital Business is looking for the new thing whether it be in materials like NanoTech; healthcare like BioTech; Robotics, Space, Homeland Security, Military SensorTech, etc. Everyone wants the next new thing.

This is how we get money to flow and release back into the game, if not we will not progress as fast in innovation or keep the flow here in the United States. Problem is when you have 1500 new start-ups hyping BioTech and only 12 which are making money. If the SEC goes after all of them you lose the 12 companies, which are actually making a profit causing a negative sector rotation and about 40 more who are actually coming out with something that can help mankind. You lose the 40 new inventions and hurt the strongest 12? That is not leveling any playing field that is robbing America, and I will have no part of endorsing that.

By doing this we end up moving innovation to foreign shores, send company HQ to offshore HQs, lose jobs to emerging nations and you will see the capital leave as well. This is why when the regulatory bodies attack free markets it is not enforcement; it is pure extortion. Is the government wishing to take over the role of the mafia? If so then we may as well turn it over to a dictator and be done with our 200-year experience and use the rolled up Constitution to the light the fire of revolution? We need to have a national discussion about the corruption in government regulatory endeavors and we need to clean house. Think on this.

Character Gifts
Sunday 24 August 2008 @ 7:10 am

Last year I did something for my family on Christmas Eve that I had never done before. I had gotten inspired from a sermon at church about creating memory markers in our children’s lives. And since Christmas was approaching, I decided to put my inspiration to work.

I found a Christmas ornament for each member of my family as well as for my parents who were visiting. Each ornament represented a character quality that I saw in each of them. For example, I found an angel ornament for my daughter Kamica because I chose “joy” as her character quality. I got an old antique spoon for my husband because he has a “servant’s heart.”

I also wrote each one of them a small note telling them why I chose the character quality that I did for them…why I saw that special quality in them. I also selected a verse out of the Bible that talked about that quality.

I thought it would be a very special moment for all of them - to know how someone else saw them. And let me tell you, I was the one who couldn’t get through the presentations without crying!!
This is something that I plan on doing every 3-5 years. As my children grow and change, different character qualities will be their strengths. I can’t think of a more valuable gift than to let them know how someone else sees them and to show them they are valued for whom they are on the inside.

Everyone cares about how others see him or her; and whether or not they matter. “Character” gifts are priceless because they strike at the core of the individual receiving them. I guarantee that if you undertake this precious, precious idea, everyone will leave better for it and you will truly impact your loved one’s hearts.

Investment Real Estate: An Inexpensive Way To Get Started
Tuesday 19 August 2008 @ 9:57 pm

If you are considering getting involved in investment real estate, let me offer some of the amazing information available in my wealth-building system, Winning the Mortgage Game. In several parts of my system, I outline a strategy for getting started in investing in real estate, without being a landlord. Also, it can be done without a lot of money up front. The method I describe is purchasing mobile home notes.

A mobile home is a manufactured home, which has no land attached. It can be purchased and moved or purchased at a mobile home park. Now, you can actually purchase the mortgage from a private investor — meaning you will own the right to collect payments from someone who owns the mobile home.
In other words, you will be the bank — the entity holding a note on a piece of property, collecting monthly payments.

You are not, however, a landlord. The people paying you actually own the property. They maintain it and fix any problems that arise. You, as the bank, have the right to foreclose, if they stop paying. But, if you’ve bought carefully, you will never have to worry about them not paying.

Now, this is just a cursory lesson on owning a note.

For more details on owning a mortgage and collecting payments, as a way to make money in real estate, get the wealth-building system Winning the Mortgage Game.

Golf Playing Tips: Learn How To Play Golf In 5 Easy Ways
Tuesday 19 August 2008 @ 5:37 pm

For people who are into playing golf, nothing matters most for them than to have a better score when playing the game. This is because most golfers usually take their gratifications in the scores that they make.

Therefore, for people who want to increase their playing skill, here is a list of some tips that they can use to improve their gaming performance.

1. Pump up before the game starts

Every golfer must first learn the things they have to do before they play the game. The problem with most players is that they tend to think that since golf is not a very strenuous sport like basketball, they don’t have to do some warm up exercises.

This should not be the case because golfers need to warm up and stretch those muscles before they start making double bogeys.

2. Swinging is a perfect exercise

In golf, the most pressured and the most exerted part of the body are the hands. Hence, it is important to exercise them before playing the game.

Swinging can effectively pull out any stressed or rigid muscle in the hand. It’s best to keep on practicing swinging. Experts say that almost 50% of a golfer’s ability is based on swinging.

3. Consider the size of the club

In order to play the best golf game, it is important for a player to choose the right golf club that he or she will use. The first to consider when choosing a golf club is its length. The length should be proportionate and suitable to the player so that he or she will be comfortable when playing.

4. Familiarize the six parts of golf swings

In order to play best in golf, it is important for a player to familiarize himself or herself on the six parts of the golf swing technique. The six parts of the swing are the proper alignment of the golf club; proper setup of the golfer’s posture and position; back swing; “take-away”; impact; and the “follow-through”.

5. Know the course

A good golfer should know his or her terrain. Hence, it is important for a golfer to note the so-called “trouble areas”. This is where some imminent problems are present like a sloping part of the fairway or hanging branch of a tree.

These are just some of the basic tips that one could use in playing golf. However, the most important thing a golfer should remember is to keep his or her body healthy before the competition. It’s where they generate their power for that beautiful back swing.

Building a Web Site for Your Home-Based Business
Wednesday 13 August 2008 @ 12:43 pm

Yes, your home-based business needs an Internet presence. A home-based business can benefit greatly from having a website. It is a good idea to plan your website strategy in advance and launch it at the same time you start your business. You should include your domain name, your Web address, and your email address on all of your sales material, business cards, advertising material, brochures, and letterheads. Your website will be available to provide information to your clients 24 hours a day. If it is set up properly, it can expand your sales and attract more customers.

You should consider the following issues when you set up your Web site:

Be sure your domain name conveys the image you want for your company and protect your domain name.

Shop around for a good Web hosting package.

If you are going to sell online, you should apply for a merchant account and you can shop for the best deal.

Your site must have a professional appearance and be easy to access and use.

Include a disclaimer, a privacy policy and a terms of use agreement.

Include coupons, special offers, or news articles to attract people to your website.

Your website must be updated frequently, and it needs to be promoted heavily in all emails, letterheads, business cards, etc.

Choosing a good web design company

You need to decide who will build your website. If you have the technical know-how or the money to hire a full-time Web staff, you can develop the site yourself. For most small businesses, however, it is better to outsource the work. You will not get much attention with a static, simplistic website.

A well-designed website can raise money, attract customers, and develop your reputation. Consider the following basic steps to increase your odds of hiring a creative, technology-wise, and cost-effective design firm:

Decide whether you need your website created, implemented, and maintained. If your site will serve only as an online brochure, you can outsource the creation and implementation and handle the future maintenance yourself

Research a Web developer’s work to evaluate their potential. You may find the best developer’s through recommendations. Evaluate their online portfolios, their fees, and their design sense. If possible, hire a firm that is familiar with your particular industry.

Evaluate the developer’s full package of services. Can they help you advertise and sell your products online? Does the developer have the skills necessary to create all the web services you need including extras such as trademarking, copywriting, marketing and other services.

Find a developer that works collaboratively with you. Be sure they listen to your needs and explain issues in ways that you can understand. Be sure they understand your business and your industry and that they can project your vision on the site.

Be sure the developer will complete your site when they say they will. Be sure the design firm can adhere to deadlines, meet your requests, responds to your suggestions and questions, fixed problems promptly, and worked within your budget.

Content is still the key to an effective and successful website. However, the presentation of that content and the look of your site are important, because they convey your company image. Most good designers know that Web surfers want to go straight to the content, but be sure your site does not have too much animation, splash, or flashing graphics. These will drive traffic away from the site.

Be sure your site is easy to use and navigate. Your users should be able to get where they want to go in two clicks without having too many choices. A site map and a “back” button are very important.

Be sure your Web site has a place for “contact us,” feedback, comments, and questions. It is always a good idea to get feedback so that you gain insight into how your customers think and get ideas for improving your site, your product, or your service.

Look at your site very carefully and delete any unclear graphics and boring information. Bad graphics look unprofessional, and boring information turns people away. Have other people look at the colors and text you use on your site and get their feedback.

Present your products or services in several ways. Not every visitor to your site will shop by the same set of criteria, and it is easy to allow people to sort through your presentation by several methods. Visitors should be able to shop by product type, alphabetically, by size, by manufacturer, or by any other criteria that you think visitors will use.

It must be easy for customers to order. All ordering information such as order forms, toll-free number, and mailing address must be readily available to customers. There should be a clear link for ordering on every page. You may want to purchase the services of a Shopping Cart service to help you handle the processing and shipping of your orders. One example is Shoppingcart.com, but there are others.

Be sure your website designer knows how to incorporate codes and use key words so that your site has a favorable position in search engines. Search engine optimization is important, and your website designer should include this in the package of services that are sold to you.

For your first website, it is better to hire a website developer who is local. You will want to be able to drive to your developer’s office and have frequent meetings while your website is under development.

Remember that your website provides less expensive advertising than other media. You have the potential to reach everyone in the world who has a computer and an internet service provider.

Innovations in Auto Glass, Part I
Saturday 9 August 2008 @ 7:54 am

Having the opportunity to run a franchise company in the auto sector has been quite an interesting job indeed. During my time as the CEO of The Car Wash Guys we ran a small team of researchers who gathered industry information from where ever we could find it. One of the most interesting new inventions we found was remarkable.

Let’s discuss some new innovations in Auto Safety, which are currently in the news. One interesting invention we found to be interesting, as we have studied Ultra-Sonic Mini-Blind Cleaning as an add-on market for our Window Washing company is the HUD; Heads up Displays which can be projected onto the windshield of a vehicle and the de-ice units using focused frequencies that break up the ice as you drive. When ice forms on your windshield you cannot see anything and are 50 times more likely to hit something.

Now then before we start discussing this newest technology, let us talk about some of our previous discussions on this inter-related subject. HUD displays in racing, human computer interface and other uses.

www.parthe.net/_cwg0803/0000000c.htm

www.parthe.net/_cwg0803/00000033.htm

www.parthe.net/_cwg1003/00000054.htm

This is happening as predicted: OSRAM supplies LEDs for BMW head-up display Compound Semiconductor - Bristol, UK The display can be programmed and is easy to read day or night in all conditions thanks to an Osram light sensor which automatically adjusts the brightness.

www.compoundsemiconductor.net/articles/news/8/3/4/1

Now then lets discuss the issues of this newest technology, which has to do with clean windshields and getting rid of ice as you drive or off your car without scraping. And I suggested that we integrate all these systems into the SmartVehicle System with net-centric sensors a de-icing unit using high frequency bursts. A temperature system for controlling cabin comfort has a sensor on the windshield. Then disperses this other system. Depending on the frequency used to free the ice, it shouldn’t interfere with electronics. And how about the cross over applications to Private Jets, Airlines and Military for the HUD displays? Here is the Press Release Describing this technology:

“Ice Surface Development, Inc. Ice surface Development, Inc. (ISDI) is a development company, focused on Ice Technology. Our mission is to increase the value of our principal asset — the rights to Ice Technology developed by Dr. Victor Petrenko and owned by Dartmouth University. Our strategy for improving the value of this technology is by further advancing the proof-of concept for specific, high value applications. ISDI owns the exclusive rights to this extremely valuable and innovative technology for all motorized, land based vehicles world-wide. The applications ISDI is developing will improve the driving experience for industrial, commercial and consumer vehicle users by reducing safety risks, increasing productivity and eliminating the hassle of ice removal and loss of traction. The most significant applications include: de-icing of glass surfaces, and improving the grip of tires to ice and snow. The market is already showing considerable interest in de-icing. A J.D. Power and Associates report on emerging automotive technologies released this February 20, 2002 states:

“Heated windshield (windscreen) glass garners the highest interest among European consumers. Nearly 90 percent of consumers express strong interest in the feature, which evenly clears away ice, snow and frost from the front windshield within three minutes, improving visibility. Heated windshield glass was also well received by U.S. consumers, however, not to the same extent as by the Europeans.”

Our technology can actually outperform the hypothetical, emerging technology described to the over 6,000 participants in this study. Increased tire adhesion is an even newer, more revolutionary concept that will follow de-icing. ISDI has joined forces with the best expertise from the relevant disciplines to move these applications forward. We are also in active discussions with a handful of interested strategic investors to help us execute our financial strategy. The essence of the strategy is to advance the development within a time frame of relatively high shareholder returns. We believe this point will be reached for de-icing when we have completed sufficient prototyping work to demonstrate in very specific applications the functional, cost and industry safety requirements. This process is well underway. Our plan also calls for tire adhesion applications to follow by about 6 months. In this application we anticipate scaling up our 1/3 scale lab model to a full sized prototype and testing it in a larger variety of adverse conditions. Altering Ice adhesion - starting with de-icing Dr. Petrenko of Dartmouth, the world’s foremost expert on ice technology, has discovered how to radically alter the adhesion of ice to conductive surfaces, either increasing or decreasing depending on the application. In the de-icing example above, the initial action, 1, is to deliver a low energy electric impulse to the glass surface creating within a few seconds a non-adhesive barrier between the ice and glass.

The second action, 2, the dispersal of the ice, occurs immediately — creating an ice free surface. Our principal near term objective is to establish these de-icing applications for autos/trucks — including windshields, side and rear windows, external mirrors, headlights, wipers and perhaps bodies. In the above diagram, demonstrating our High Frequency Approach, the technology de-ices surfaces in 0C to -30C temperature range. Power requirements range from 0.25 kw/m2 to 4 kw/m2 depending on temperature and wind speed (up to 200mile/h). In low-wind conditions this de-icer keeps protected surfaces unfrozen at a power rate of 0.25 kw/ m2 to 0.3kw/m2. (These power requirements are well within a standard automobile power supply). The net effect is to initially de-ice and then maintain ice-free conditions for drivers, improving safety, convenience and driver/equipment productivity. Improving Tire Grip Our other significant application is improving the grip of tires on ice or snow. Again, this application of the technology has been proven in the lab, and is supported by a 1/3 scale prototype and testing rig, with an example of test data to the left indicating the increase in effective friction when power is applied. The adhesion of tires to ice have been magnified by as much as 20-fold, providing a grip on ice similar to asphalt or concrete.”
