Navigating the Maze for Low Cost International Calls
Monday 11 January 2010 @ 2:03 pm

I know I’m not alone in feeling as though I’m in the Dark Ages when it comes to figuring out phone services and various calling plans. I’m truly not a Luddite, but with the plethora of phones, phone cards, calling cards, long distance phone service options, and local phone service options available, how is the average consumer supposed to make an informed decision? There are times when I find myself longing for the old days, when AT&T was the only game in town - or the country, for that matter.

I received a call from my phone company about a week ago. It turns out that my DSL contract is up at the end of the month. To be honest, I didn’t even know I had a contract for DSL. I thought I just signed up for it - end of story. The sales rep on the phone started asking rapid-fire questions about my current phone service and rattled off different types of phone service and rate plans. I was completely paralyzed. First, I didn’t understand why, if she was from the phone company, she didn’t already know my calling plan. Second, I have a deep distrust in this phone company, and simply wanted to keep my service, and for her to go away. I told her as much, though very politely, of course. Needless to say, I’m dreading my next phone bill, just in case she messed with my plan.

In the meantime, I decided to hold my breath and dive into the world of telephony in an attempt to figure out what options are out there. What I’ve discovered is that there are many new technologies and plans available for virtually every need.

For example, dial around is a great option for people who want to save money on domestic and international long distance while still using their own phone (cell, home, or business) and not changing companies. It combines the convenience of a calling card with many of the features found with traditional long distance.

VOIP is a great option for people with high speed Internet. They can have low cost local and long distance phone without sacrificing quality. They will also get very low international call rates and many features not found with traditional phone service.

International callback works well for people who live outside the U.S. and want to make low cost international calls. They can bypass their existing high cost long distance company and make high quality, low cost calls throughout the U.S.

Pre-paid phone cards are great for people who are traveling or who want to make occasional low cost domestic or international calls. They can be used to make calls from 130 countries and offer convenience because they can be used from any phone.

Right now, I’m deciding which option to use for low cost international calls, since my mother-in-law lives in Europe and I live in the U.S. Although my cell phone service touted low international rates, my last bill was astronomical. I’ll definitely never call her from my cell phone again.

VeraTrack Makes Verifying Employee Applications Worry Free
Friday 4 December 2009 @ 12:52 am

Choosing the right candidate when searching for new employees is frustrating enough without having to complete a lengthy Employment Verification procedure. Conducting employment verifications for new hire candidates typically takes much longer for in-house HR personnel than an outsourced verification provider. Outsourcing Employment Verification is the latest and most cost-effective way to get your perfect applicant in a punctual and efficient manner. You can employ a company to verify employment on all of your applicants. You would typically be charged based on the number of verifications performed for you in a month. This process preserves accuracy and efficiency while freeing up valuable human resources.

Recently, a company called VeraTrack revealed a revolutionary and proprietary system that uses technology, and an automated system, to drastically reduce the strain that Employment Verification presents. All a company has to do is log in, enter the pertinent information about both the company and the employee, enter the data to be verified, and then wait for a reply. The system subsequently sends notice to the previous company requesting that they log on (using a secure verification code) and complete the necessary information. Once this step is accomplished, the hiring company is notified, and the verification is finished. This procedure can take up to a few days before completion. Even still, but it is far from the days of taking weeks or months. This is a great time saver for you, your company and your employees.

Phone Cards for international Calls
Monday 2 November 2009 @ 12:26 pm

There was a time, before phone cards, when long distance and international calls - even to friends and relatives - required a good amount of preparations. Everyone making international calls had to back-calculate:

• How much money do I want to spend on this international call?
• How many minutes does it give me?
• And what do I need to talk for this many minutes?

Sound funny?

Yes it does in today’s world, where phone cards are making long distance and international calls cheaper day by day. Phone cards were first introduced to make long distance calling easy and convenient. One could make long distance and international calls from any phone using these cards. Then came the price war between the long distance operators and the cost of calling using phone cards started coming down significantly compared to post-paid phone connections.

Phone cards offered today come with different facilities and operating modes:

• Some need a PIN to activate.
• Some need a call to be placed from pre-registered numbers.
• Some need a call to be placed on a toll-free number first to dial long distance, or
• A combination of two of more of the above.

Modes of payment also differ from operator to operator:

• Some cards can be used only as pre-paid ones. Once the minutes allocated for the value of the card are over, the card is of no use.
• Some cards come with the facility of “filling in minutes” by paying an additional amount once the allocated minutes are consumed.
• Payments are generally accepted over the Internet or in collections centers in cash or via credit cards.

Phone cards have, no doubt, made international calls more accessible and cheaper. But still, differences in service and rates offered by various operators exist. Hence, it is advisable to shop around a little before buying a phone card. Some of the factors one needs to consider are:

• Reliability of the operator: Many fly-by-night operators also came in to the phone card business looking at the response rate and the market size. Avoid them.
• Service quality of the operator: Check if the calls can be connected at any time and if the line and voice quality is really clear.
• Rates: Rates offered by operators differ from state to state and country to country. They may also depend on the time when you call - higher at the time of peak traffic. Hence, check out where you are likely to call most and then decide on your operator.

How to Avoid Bankruptcy
Wednesday 23 September 2009 @ 11:10 pm

Almost everyone confronts monetary hardship in the course of their fiscal lifetime. For that reason, unpaid commitments will likely creep up. Individuals may deal with these challenges due to employment loss, divorce, sudden passing of a family or just bad personal cash management. Companies typically confront difficulty in the initial few years of operation. At fault for a company shutting down can stretch from increased competition, accidents, loss of big accounts to name a few. Whatever the origin, bad-debt can lead to bankruptcy. On the other hand, there are alternatives to bankruptcy that can diminish damage to your individual credit report or your company credit profile.

Insolvency can be definable as a lack of ability of a family or a partnership to fulfill money owed to their creditors. If an organization files, the defaulter (yourself or your company) is obligated to surrender all exemption free property and inventory for sale. While personal assets are protected, you will also pledge a particular share of your realized pay to the creditors based upon a structured repayment program. Your credit report grading will become very low for ages, meaning that you won’t be able to find funding for whatever private or business organisation for a extended time.

Problems such as these can induce concern. Insolvency proceedings are exceedingly stressful and may lead to painful ideas and actions. Looking for positive ways out of a painfulsituation before you get to insolvency court of law is advisable. Debt negotiation perhaps could be just that option for you.

Maybe you are asking “How come my bankers are are consenting to tolerate debt negotiation?” The truth is that almost any alternative is advantageous to the lender when compared to bankruptcy. Bankruptcy alternatives are valuable to both the financial institute and yourself. The lender is able to recover at least a part of the funds that they are owed and you’re able to deal with. Allowing a debt management plan that is always less than the initial total you in reality owe is better than zero.

Debt settlement is a decent option for people looking for advice with credit card debt. When a single, solitary payment is overlooked, virtually all credit lines obtain an extremely sizeable interest rate increase that then will weigh on the current balance due. This rate hike will make it increasingly challenging to pay off the credit card in the following months which probably will likely send your debt twirling out of reach. Debt resolution will let you to pay off your debt with just a fraction of what you owe without pulverizing your FICO rating for a decade.

Company Director Fined for Violation of Health and Safety at Work Etc Act 1974
Friday 19 June 2009 @ 11:59 am

A Scottish construction company, Discovery Homes (Scotland) Ltd. along with its director-site manager Mr Richard Lionel John Pratt, has been held liable for the violation of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. Both pleaded guilty and were fined £5,000 and £4,000 respectively by the Dundee Sheriff Court earlier in the week. It is the second time in the last six years that a director of a company has been held liable for violation of the Act.

The prosecution followed the death of a construction worker named Andrezej Freitag, who fell from an elevation of around three metres on 29th May, 2008 and later succumbed to his injuries. He fell from an exhaust shaft because there was no strong barricade which could have protected him.

Murray Provan, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Inspector, said that the victim died because of the failure of the company and the site manager to provide for security to those workers who work at such heights. The accident was therefore, expected in such a situation and could have been easily prevented. He said that the site manager used a barricade, which is usually used for road construction and is not sufficient protection for anyone working at a height. It was the responsibility of the site manager to ensure that proper safety measures were in place for the workers. His failure to do so makes him liable and by the principle of attribution of guilt, so is the company.

Mr. Provan advised employers in the construction sector to assess the risks faced by their workers and provide proper security to those working at a height. Make sure your organisation is aware of its health and safety obligations and remains compliant with CDM regulations for major building, maintenance or refurbishment work; click on CDM training operated by Workplace Law.

A Father Is Born
Sunday 14 June 2009 @ 8:53 pm

After carefully reading dozens of pregnancy books, browsing through endless parenting websites, and going for tons of prenatal classes, my wife and I believed that we were all prepared for our firstborn. I was ready to be a father but the thought of caring for a newborn baby was exciting and scary at the same time.

On one of our visits to the OB/GYN, my wife unexpectedly started talking about mid-wives. I never thought that she would actually consider that as an option but by the end of the visit she seemed more convinced that a mid-wife was the way to go. There were lots of negative thoughts floating around in my head but the OB/GYN and my wife dispelled all of them.

Before I knew it we were interviewing a whole bunch of mid-wives from our area (surprisingly there were quite a few) from a list that our OB/GYN had given us. We wanted someone who was not only experienced enough in delivering a newborn baby but also someone whom we felt comfortable with. Thankfully, we selected Christie who turned out to be the perfect candidate for the job. She was smart, intelligent, well-qualified, friendly, and most important, stayed nearby.

Christie was extremely pro-active and engaged in long conversations with my wife. However, she spoke to me only in short sentences. “Did you talk baby talk to her tummy today?”, “Did you buy the fruits I had asked you buy for her?” and so on and so forth. I didn’t mind of course as long as everything went as planned.

As my wife slowly ballooned over an eight-month period, Christie’s visits increased exponentially. She wanted to ‘be’ there exactly when the water broke and thankfully she was. A true professional, she handled everything with care while also calming my wife down. She was also well-prepared for any possible complications that might arise.

As the contractions increased, the time had come for our baby to be born. I had heard many things about the miracle of birth, but when my newborn baby entered the world with a loud wail it was the most emotional and spiritual experience of my life.

How to Set Your Party’s Tone with Table Linens
Thursday 7 May 2009 @ 6:29 am

The use of table linens for your party or special occasion will give it quite the finishing touch. Table linens are not limited to merely table cloths but include table napkins, place mats, chair coverings and/or table skirting. The feeling of any gathering, whether it be formal or casual, can be set by using table linens. When you plan a dinner party or special function, the linens you use actually are the greatest way to let your invitees recognize what type of mood the dining should be, possibly even more so than the food you dish out. Because of this, you want to make sure you pick the best table linens for the event.

When planning to keep your dining casual, consider choosing table linens made of 100% basic polyester cloth. Since you most likely will be using the linens over again, it is important that you can care for them easily at home. 100% basic polyester material is just that. It is a permanent pressed, soil release fabric that is simple to take care of, retains its coloring and does not shrink. There are some linens that need specific handling such as dry cleaning, so you may want to keep away from these for your casual dining. Guests will feel awkward if they believe that precaution is necessary to avoid ruining your linens.

For a more formal dinner party or special occasion, the best table linens to use are the luxurious materials such as crinkle, sparkle organza, satin or pintuck. It is easy to match these fabrics to your current decor because they come in numerous colors. Renting linens such as matte satin, tissue lame, iridescent crush or polystripe is a good alternative for the “one time event” that is taking place away from the home. Guests who attend an event where a combination of tablecloths, napkins, place mats, chair covers and/or table skirting is utilized will feel special and welcome.

It is easy enough to determine the mood of your special occasion based on the fabrics and patterns of the table linens you choose. In fact, today’s host/hostess is really limited by only his/her vision. Consider all the hard work your spent into planning a special gathering and don’t let a failure to match linens have your party look unfinished.

A Barrister’s Bookcase: Piece One
Friday 20 March 2009 @ 11:05 am

A Barrister’s bookcase is a unreformed bookcase Its telling feature is a plain glass front end. This glass front end is hinged at the top allowing someone easy admittance to ledgers and other legal documents merely by lifting the glass door. The barrister bookcase is perfect for many things. Barrister bookcases were frequently used by lawyers since it was necessary for them to keep on moving. Today, they are also very useful, specially if one is perpetually on the move. This is because of the doors. This enables ledgers and collectibles to be moved while still inside the bookcase while still continuing them.

These fine shelves

Barrister bookcases have the advantage of protecting the collectibles from debris and other foreign impurities. They offer excellant protection in this regard. Apart from debris, it is also possible to provide protection from sun by adding a film of UV protection. This will help in minimizing the amount and intensity of sun impacting the books This will maintain the books coloring from languishing

The bookcases, despite their many merits, can be quite costly. Fortunately, their many advantages have moved some producers to start creating replica editions and some in modern versions at very reasonable prices. Some versions have simple appearances and can be made to fit a particular decor. They can also be trimmed and made into customized storage units cheaply. They can be stacked allowing them to be easily used to create creative unit placements. Some can be used to create sofa tables, kitchen tables or even dining areas.
