Isildur1 Still Losing, but Still a Presence
Wednesday 30 December 2009 @ 11:39 am

We’ve been keeping up with the relatively new to the scene poker online player “Isildur1″ who is taking part in the “Durrr” challenge on Full Tilt Poker. The Unknown Swede was bested over the weekend of Thanksgiving by none other than FTP’s pros Brian Townsend and IIari “Zigmund” Sahamies.

Townsend, the first challenger, bested “Isildur1″ for about 1.1 million. They were playing pot-limit Omaha at the 200-400 dollar stakes (surprisingly a stake level lower than what Isildur1 is used to playing at). Aside from Townsend ending the session up 1.1 milliion, the gain was accomplished in just under 1000 hands. Quite impressive by any standard.

After Townsend quit the game, “Isildur1″ was still looking for some action. That’s when he found “Zigmund” and dropped an additional 250k+ to the seasoned poker online player.

The next day however, turned out to be a little friendlier to Isildur. “Zigmund” made a showing again, playing at the 500-1000 stakes in PLO, and while first besting “Isildur1″ for about 1 million, he ended up down for the day after “Isildur1″ accused him of a “hit-n-run” which caused “Zigmund” to rejoin the game and put “Isildur1″ up a cool 1.3 million.

In any event, this newcomer to the scene has provided some much needed action to the “Durrr” challenge and the high stakes online poker tables at FTP. Hopefully after some refinement, we can find out what this guy is really made of.

Overrated Hands
Wednesday 2 December 2009 @ 10:56 am

We’re going to look at some common well known online poker hands and take a look at their overrated nature. Not that these hands are all necessarily bad online poker hands, it’s just that several of them are played regardless of other factors essential to online poker success. First up is the legendary 10-2 of spades. Maybe some people have a superstitious thing about spades, that they hold some mystical quality or something, but they don’t. It’s the Doyle Brunson hand and it’s not recommended that you ever play this hand unless you’re making a steal move, in position, in an unopened pot. Otherwise forget it. Brunson played it with success because he had an amazing read on his opponent and the flop gave him the odds to do what he did with it. Next up is Jack Ten. People love this hand since it’s a paint card with so many connecting potentials but if you think about it so is 78, so there’s nothing really special about a suited jack. It’s a great hand to play in multiway pots as it blocks so many other high cards from connecting with the board, but played recklessly, it can lose you a lot of money since you’re not guaranteed to connect with the board, and if you do hit a Jack, you have three stronger kickers to worry about. Another hand to play in position rather than open raise a pot with. Finally we talk about the suited Aces from A5 to A2. These are really overrated hands. First off the odds of flopping a flush are extremely small. If you do flop four to the flush then you’re 40% to complete, and you have the nuts, but that’s a rare occurrence a well. I see too many people open raising with hands like this, and only catching an Ace and being totally out kicked. The other problem is that this hand only straightens out to a wheel, so you can’t even get open ended with it. The best odds you’ll get on a straight are gutshot odds, which need about 9:1 odds to call with for positive expected value. And a good opponent isn’t going to give you those kinds of odds. Yet again, these hands are only good for opening unopened pots in position or making a steal attempt with a tight image.

Aiming for Third in Sit and Go Tournaments
Friday 20 November 2009 @ 10:36 am

If you are an avid player of sit and go poker tournaments, you have probably realized that the best players never appear to be aiming for the first place slot. They move along the game slowly, appear to be playing only to half their ability, and then somehow end up winning. These top notch players have mastered the secret of sit and go online poker tournaments, which is to aim for third place.

Aiming for third place is by far the best strategy because it allows you to end up in the money without worrying about being first. Everyone in the top three gets paid, so ending up at spot three takes the financial burden off of your game. You are then more relaxed, and in a better position to make a strong showing at the end of the game. If you aim for third, you will also have enough chips to carry on in the game. You are then in a good position to take advantage of more aggressive players that are willing to throw their chips away.

The beauty of ending up in third place is that there is not actually a large difference in the payouts between second and third place. Third place typically gets 20% while second gets 30%. It’s such a small difference; you are better off aiming for the safe option when you play poker online.

Make Your Own Chocolate Candy
Thursday 12 November 2009 @ 3:25 am
A lot of women (and men) find chocolates irresistible. It’s been verified that when we consume sweets or oily foods, our body releases the hormone serotonin which dictates the movements in our guts. Our brain utilizes the excess serotonin to influence our appetites, moods, and intense emotions. That’s why, after eating chocolate, some people are livelier and more cheery; and why some has come to rely on chocolates as a pick-me-up.
Subsequent studies have shown that “chocoholism” isn’t necessarily detrimental. Your body’s physiology is reacting to the stimuli coming from the flavors, nutrients, and chemicals in chocolates.
Good thing you don’t need to travel miles to get your “chocofix.” You can make your own chocolate candy right at home, with ingredients found on grocery or supermarket shelves and utensils that are available at home.
Make sure you have the following ready: double boiler, mixing bowl, candy molds/baking sheets, rubber spatula, and white/dark chocolates.
All you need to do is melt the chocolate in the double boiler, constantly stirring it with a wooden spoon or a spatula. Transfer the molten liquid from the double boiler to the baking sheets/candy molds. One option is to submerge fruits in the molten chocolate for fruit-filled confectioneries. Tap out any air bubbles from your chocolate candy and let it set in the freezer if you’re not going to serve it immediately.
One thing to watch out for though: chocolate that’s not tempered won’t have that glossy sheen and may have gray spots on the surface. Tempering scatters chocolate crystals uniformly, otherwise the cocoa butter will show as gray blotches on top of your candies. What could be tedious in tempering is the fact that you’ll have to observe proper chocolate temperatures throughout the preparation time.
There is, though, an easy way to temper your chocolate candy: invest in a chocolate tempering machine and let it do the “dirty” work of monitoring temperatures. The wonderful thing about letting tempering machines automate the process for you is that you get to have quality chocolates without the hassle and possibly a saleable product to boot!

Face the Ace Episode Two
Tuesday 13 October 2009 @ 9:53 am

In the 2nd episode, our hero who’d previously beaten 2 pros, went on to face the 3rd ace for a chance to win $1 million. His ace was Gavin Smith. Gavin is a very likeable poker online player, and through his demeanor, trapped the challenger into playing casino online poker outside of his comfort zone. Gavin likes to see a lot of flops because his post flop play is fantastic. To do this he limps or calls a lot, but doesn’t often raise. Within hands, his opponent falls into his pattern and starts playing very submissively. Post flop play is not is strong suit against Gavin. Gavin basically takes control of the match and never loses it.

The guy went for the million and lost, and justifiably, he looked like he was about to cry. “I’m really down right now” he said to the host. No kidding! You just went from $200,000 to nothing! $40,000 might not be life changing money, I can see how someone might go on to face ace #2. But sacrificing $200,000 sounds a bit ridiculous. This is heads up poker against a professional. He should have taken the 200k and walked, instead he got nothing.

This is how the game show works. It’s a bit harsh. I think there should be joker doors for the losers to choose from. They get door prizes, like poker tables, life supply of silly putty, a camel, trip to Alabama….but make it funny so it’s not so heartbreaking when they lose if they went for the higher limits. Maybe they get a seat into some $5k or $10 event. It’s a game show that is unlikely to give much money away anyway. It’s amateurs vs. professionals. I think they can afford some door prizes.

Spotting a Shark
Thursday 20 August 2009 @ 10:42 am

Shark is a term used to describe an advanced online poker player that easily takes the pot every time. The term derives from the idea that inexperienced players are “fish” that “school” together. Following this metaphor, a shark is a player that can take advantage of the fish at the table. Sharks tend to find the most prey at poker tournaments, especially in the beginning stages of the tournament. In the early steps, players need to be rapidly eliminated based on their skill ability. During this stage of the tournament, sharks are easily recognized by their ruthless nature against the more inexperienced players. A shark will always have a large pile of chips in front of them. One of the drawbacks of being a shark is that other poker online player s will immediately recognize the skill needed to win big. Anyone can spot a shark, which means that everyone can prepare themselves for coming face to face with this type of poker player. Some players feel that it is actually a better strategy to project an aura of uncertainty so that the other players at the table will be more lenient. Sharks do not have the option of appearing weak, so this strategy is not available of you are labeled as a shark. As always in poker, table image is everything, and it all boils down to how you are perceived by your fellow poker players.

Playing Extremely Tight Poker Players
Wednesday 1 April 2009 @ 9:54 am

Sometimes in online poker you see a hand that goes down unfairly that, even though you’re not in it, you can’t help but feel bad. I was playing casino games and Texas hold ‘em at an online poker and casino site recently, and there was one guy who hardly ever raised or bet for like a half hour straight. He was very tight.

Now, one hand he makes a raise of $10. this is very auspicious, because not only did he rarely raise, but the standard raise at the table was $3-$5. It was obvious this guy was holding QQ, KK, or AA.

Well, I and most other people at the table, promptly realized this and folded. However, one person called the ten dollars.

Now the flop comes 10-8-2 rainbow. The guy who made the raise goes all in, and the other guy calls! Well, as we all suspected, the guy who went all in and made the original raise did indeed have AA. But the guy who called had Q-10 offsuit?!? Only a complete moron calls a preflop raise that’s about 3 times the size of the pot with a Q-10. That’s a losing play and you will lose money in the long run playing that stupidly. But what happens, a queen comes on the turn! The river was a blank and the poor guy with pocket Aces lost a huge pot because some idiot made a horrible call and got lucky. I fely really bad for the guy but, as they say, that’s poker.
