Disabilities Stuttering
Friday 27 June 2008 @ 9:54 pm

There are many types of disablity. Would people class stuttering as a disability?

I think most people would probably say no, however I disagree. People who stutter have to struggle their way through life at times.
I am somebody who had a stutter for eighteen years. I am going to now explain one of the situations that I found difficult and how my mind or what I would call my demons would be saying to me.

This is when trying to meet and approach people of the opposite sex.
Lets say I am in a bar and I see a woman/girl who catches my eye. I think to myself, who don’t you go and talk to her and make a move etc?
My demons are always talking to me, and are basically saying
“She won’t want to know you.

You have a stutter and when you start talking she will hear it.
Do you really think she will want to date somebody who has a stutter?
Even if she is interested, you then have to possibly meet her friends and family.

How will they find you and treat you, when they realise you have a stutter?”
These demons would make me think twice and more often than not I would not even bother going over and talking to the person. I would therefore let the demons win.

This is one example of thousands where the stutter handicaps your ability to live a normal life. This is why I believe stuttering is a disability.

Lose Weight, Gain Back Your Life
Friday 6 June 2008 @ 7:56 pm

I’m going to share with you a simple but very life changing technique that will change the many years of overeating, emotional eating or yoyo diets. It has changed my life and the lives of all those who have undertaken my program.

In order to move forward you need to look back. Back on the things that keep reoccurring that stop you from breaking through those overeating barriers which are: Fanatical Dieting, Emotional Eating and Conditioning (see my article ‘3 reason why we fail at dieting’.

For those who live in the ‘3 reasons why we fail at dieting’ mode, I am going to share with you for FREE a very simple technique to overcome it. It doesn’t matter whether you believe in it or not. All you have to do is do it and you will start to have changes instantaneously.

Fanatical dieters

Scientific research shows 90% of people who attempt to lose weight FAIL and how do the 90% of people who fail feel…like failures, but they keep dieting anyway thinking the next diet will be the one that works. Some success, then no success and although some weight may have been lost it all gets piled back on again…making you feel once again like a failure.

Let me make one thing quite clear. You are not stupid, dumb or lazy. Losing weight has nothing to do with will power or lack of it. So get that information out of your head.

Emotional Eating

Emotional eating is the second most proven reason for overeating, causing obesity in the world. Eating because of boredom, loneliness, being miserable, tired and a million and one other reasons - none of which has anything to do with physical hunger.

Emotional eating is a nagging, get rid of the nagging and no more emotional eating.

Conditioning

Basically over a period of time of overeating you have conditioned your mind and body to be that way. No amount of dieting, will power, pills and shakes can change that.

The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to change the way you think about food and your relationship with it. It’s about reprogramming our mind and body again.

Solution

Emotional Freedom Technique! I’m not going to go into the how to’s ,where for’s or history of Emotional Freedom Technique. You can go to my website for that. Basically the precept of this technique is ‘the cause of all negative emotion is a block in the body’s energy system’. Get rid of the block and you nullify the emotion.

Once again to utilize this technique you only need DO IT! You don’t have to believe in it that really doesn’t matter but to get the full benefits of it you do need to DO IT!

Emotional Freedom Technique works by tapping on parts of the body’s energy meridian and speaking some affirmations. No pills, No shakes, No exercise equipment, No drugs, No side effects, No money passing hands…just the technique.

Tapping

You will be using your pointer and middle fingers from either hand to do the tapping. At each meridian you will tap 7 times, give or take this method is very forgiving.

The Setup

The most important part of the technique is the setup. To do this we say an affirmation whilst tapping or rubbing a particular spot. For the purpose of this exercise I am going to show you the karate chop set up. If you have a look at your hand, palm facing you, look at the side of the hand from the top of the pinky finger down to the wrist. Just above the wrist is a flesh part where one would normally do a karate chop…have you found it. If so this is the area you will tap using you pointer and middle fingers.

Ok…so now that we have all of that out of the way I want you to tap you karate spot for practice.

Basic Recipe - The Meridians

The meridians are as follow, try and find it on your body as I mention it. Practice a little so you become familiar with them.

1. Eye Brow - this is the beginning of the eyebrow above the nose

2. Side of Eye - this can be found the bone at the end of the eyebrow

3. Under Eye - on the cheekbone under the eye

4. Under Nose- under the nose above the top lip

5. Chin - the crevasse between the lower lip and the chin

6. Collar bone - just under the collar bone

7. Armpit - halfway down under the armpit

8. Thumb - under the nail of the thumb

9. Pointer finger - bottom side of the nail facing the thumb

10. Middle finger - bottom side of the nail facing the thumb

11. Little finger - bottom side of the nail facing the thumb

Repeat 1 to 7

The Affirmation Statements

Whilst tapping your karate spot you say an affirmation that is specific to you. Where there are blanks you fill in the reason. For the purpose of this exercise we are going to work on a particular food craving of yours. What I want you to do is go buy yourself what ever it is you craving, keeping in mind you may not want to eat it when you finish this exercise.

Before you start this exercise I want you to rate your desire to want what ever it is you have a craving for. I want you to smell it and savor the smell. I want you to have a small bite. Now on a scale from 0 - 10, 0 being no craving, 10 being crave it, write it down on a piece of paper for later reference.

The Statement

Whilst tapping your karate spot say the following affirmation as loud as you possibly can, if you can’t say it out loud, say it loud in your mind. Repeat the affirmation and tapping 3 times.

“Even though I have a craving for ………………… I deeply and completely accept myself” Repeat 2 more times

Now follow the Basic Recipe, whilst tapping at each meridian say “craving for …….”

“Even though I still have a craving for ………………… I deeply and completely accept myself”

When you finish rate yourself from 0 - 10 again and write it down. You should notice a shift in your desire to eat what ever it is you desire, even to the point it no longer taste the same to you. If you haven’t reached a 0, repeat this exercise again.

The Emotional Freedom Technique works equally well on the ‘3 reasons why we fail at dieting’, this can be overcome using my highly successful Gain Back Your Life - Lose Weight Program.

Low Carb and Lowfat Diets…A Scam?!
Monday 26 May 2008 @ 8:26 pm

If anyone knows anything about fitness, it’s that a low fat diet is the healthiest way to avoid serious diseases, right? Maybe wrong.

In many instances quality research has shown just the opposite…that a low fat diet, sometimes even a vegetarian diet, can be harmful to your health. Although vegetarian and low-fat diets have been proven to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels, they have not demonstrated significant reductions in deaths from any disease.

The Low-Fat Approach

Popular diets of today encouraging low-fat approaches, such as the diets of Dr. Pritkin, Dr. Ornish, Macrobiotics, and Weight Watchers, are generally effective with weight-loss and reduction in blood fats. The low-fat approach has even been proven to overcome serious illness successfully.

But the majority of dieters find these plans difficult to stick with. And most research trials have not shown these diets effective in decreasing death rates from diseases in general, long-term.

Fats in a meal make you feel more ‘full’. They slow the time it takes for your stomach to empty, thus ensuring you will not feel hungry too soon.

Generally, high-carb, low-fat meals have the opposite effect. The stomach empties quicker and insulin levels increase following the meal. This means you may be hungry sooner than you’d like.

Research shows the higher insulin levels of a low-fat, high-carb diet may predispose you to adult onset diabetes, hypoglycemia, and even heart disease.

The Low-Carb Approach

These diets claim that limiting carbs, like sugars, grains, fruits, and some vegetables, is the solution. The Atkins Diet, South Beach Diet, and even the Zone Diet all suggest if you cut out the carbs or have a balance of fat/carbs/protein in every meal, you will experience weight loss and better health. Many dedicated dieters find this to be true.

Although a low-carb diet can cause weight loss, the goal of any program should be life long radiant health. It is still up for debate if this approach leads to any significant health advantages. It is possible to hasten heart disease, arthritis, cancer, and aging with a diet too high in the wrong fats and too low in essential nutrients from various fruits and veggies.

Many health care professionals find it difficult to prescribe to either of the above theories. If there is no definitive answer in either direction that is indisputable, then there must be a middle ground.

A Healthy Solution for Everyone

It is difficult to imagine that reducing intake of the wonderful fruits and vegetables that keep people well is the way to a healthy future. Research will back this up. The average American already ingests too little fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other factors present in whole, unprocessed fruits and vegetables.

In much of our history, it was rare to have many of the diseases we live with today. Most people in native cultures eating diets dictated by availability experienced vibrant health. Their death was caused by accidents, bacterial or viral diseases, or by old age. Very few died of our number one killers: cardiovascular disease and cancer.

People did not begin to experience heart disease and cancer in such great numbers until the advent of our more modern diet and lifestyle customs.

These “advances” included:

  • growing and eating more grains

  • discovering how to ‘refine’ and ‘preserve’ foods to extend shelf-life

  • consuming sugar and ’simple’ carbohydrates

  • pasteurizing and homogenizing dairy products

With the human tampering of food overall health took an undeniable turn for the worse.

Almost exclusively we now eat, even in so called ‘healthy’ or ‘organic’ foods, the following: refined products, products with added sugar, preservatives, additives, petroleum products, animal products laden with antibiotics and hormones, and animals that are fed diets that they would never eat in the wild (wild cattle do not eat other cattle, poultry by-products, or even grains; cattle eat grass).

Native cultures worldwide, before being indoctrinated with more westernized food choices, eat remarkably similar diets.

Since many food products spoil without refrigeration or freezing, most people fermented their foods. This supplies necessary probiotic bacteria, which many people supplement with today since we eat natural fermented foods so infrequently.

Whether or not they inhabited the same regions, most people ate a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and animal products in season. Very few societies tip the scales by eating mostly animal products (Inuit cultures) or mostly vegetarian (a few tribes in Africa and South America).

The similarities that bind the historical human diet together are:

  • A diet based on fresh or fermented whole, unrefined foods

  • A diet high in essential fatty acids with an omega 6 to omega 3 ratio of 4:1 (current US diets have a ratio of 16:1)

  • A diet where spirituality around food is more meaningful than the material

  • A diet with 10 times the level of fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K)

  • A diet lower in total calories overall

Wisdom passed down through the ages says that a varied diet with foods found abundant in nature is best. In almost all cultures this means a diet, as available, of fresh or dried wild meats and fish, fermented cheeses, fresh whole or fermented milk, butter, eggs, fresh, dried, or fermented fruits, fresh or fermented vegetables, whole grains (these were fermented normally, even if dried), some beans, and water or fermented beverages to drink.

It is interesting to note that instead of eating fresh foods or those naturally fermented, we chose to cook or destroy what could spoil in our foods then add additives and preservatives. Are these ‘foods’ as digestible? Do they supply the same nutrients? Does the magic number of carbohydrates versus fats or proteins really matter? What if the answer lies in ancient wisdom and thousands of years of knowledge?

Something to think about.

Body, Mind, Spirit - The Key is What’s In-Between
Monday 19 May 2008 @ 10:49 am

If you have a health problem with your body, go to a doctor. With your mind, go see a psychologist. With your spirit, see your pastor, priest or rabbi.

What could be wrong with that?

Do you know when most heart attacks occur in American society? Mondays between 6am and 8am. Why is that? Well, of course, it’s because we wake up after our happy weekend and we think “Ugh, Work.” And that bothers some of us so much, we just die. Literally.

Is there a physical cause to this heart attack? Of course. Maybe the person was overweight, or maybe they had too much cholesterol in their blood. But why did they kick off on a Monday?

Most health problems have a mental aspect as well as physical. Remember Fred Sanford in Sanford and Son? Everytime his son would aggrevate him, he would fake having a heart attack. “I’m coming, Elizabeth!!” Obviously, he was just pretending, but it is true that an emotional event can bring on all kinds of physical problems.

So, what happens when you go to a doctor about your heart, or your elbow, or your sore throat? He can only inspect the physical. He doesn’t feel qualified to delve into the emotional, mental or even spiritual aspects of your problems. And yet, you know those things are there, and you know they’re contributing to your problem.

Your doctor might refer you to a psychologist if he suspects that your problem includes something mental, but that’s usually only after he’s exhausted all his “physical options.” It used to be doctors would say “Don’t worry, it’s all in your head.” Now that’s not considered very good manners. But what a strange thing to say! What disease isn’t at least partially in your head?

Cancer has been proven to be a problem with the immune system. If your immune system is operating at full power, it fights and beats the cancer cells before they have a chance. And it’s also proven that your immune system takes a dive whenever you feel bad emotionally.

Can you imagine? Depression could be linked to cancer?

Most doctors would not admit that. They say cancer is linked to genetics and possibly to diet. That’s it. Physical causes only.

But there’s so much more we can do.

For our example of a better approach, let’s look at Traditional Chinese Medicine. Chinese Medicine is a very interesting combination of therapies that address body, mind and spirit.

They also focus on the “in-between.” These therapies recognize, not only body, mind and spirit, but the intangible “something” that sits in-between each of these. They even have a word for it. They call it “chi.” This is a kind of life force that regulates all the parts of “you:” body, mind and spirit. If your chi is good, then your health is good.

Chinese therapies include acupuncture, where tiny needles are put into the skin in certain parts of the body. The focus? To improve chi. It also includes chi gong, which is a set of exercises and meditations to improve, you guessed it, chi. Chinese massage, tai chi, herbs, and many other therapies are all focused on the “in-between,” the “chi.”

Many ancient health systems have a similar concept to chi. With the medicine practiced in India, called ayurveda, there is a concept called “prana.” It means the same thing. It’s a life energy, and all Indian therapies focus on improving that life energy, bringing it up to full force so your body, mind and spirit can thrive.

In America, we tend to want medications that will mask over the symptoms of our problems, not those that go after the root cause. In fact, the top five selling pharmaceutical drugs were all symptom-fixers, including Lipitor, a cholesterol-reducing drug, and Zoloft, an anti-depressant. Does this really seem like the best way to combat illness? To throw a blanket over the problem so we can’t see it?

Next time you have a health problem, no matter how small, I’d like you to think about how it might be your “chi.” It might be a problem, not with your throat, or your butt or your head, but it might be something that a qualified Chinese medical doctor could help you with, and, in the process, help your overall health in every way.

Varieties of Weight Loss Surgery
Wednesday 14 May 2008 @ 4:36 pm

We often see models parading during cat walks on the stage or walkway during fashion shows with such slim sexy bodies. People tend to equate slim bodies as being healthy and free from disease and illnesses. Therefore, for those who are unfortunately obese or overweight, will resort to lap band surgeries to lose weight effectively. There are several types of lap band surgeries being perform on patients.

It is important to keep in mind that while most of the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass or simply abbreviated as RNY patients drop the weight faster in the beginning, Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding or LAGB patients will have the same percentage of excess weight loss and comparable ability to keep it off after only a couple of years. Gastric banding patients may have to work a little harder in the first couple of years, but the procedure tends to encourage better eating habits which, in turn, helps in producing long term weight stability.

A systematic review concluded “LAGB has been shown to produce a significant loss of excess weight while maintaining low rates of short-term complications and reducing obesity-related co-morbidities. LAGB may not result in the most weight loss but it may be an option for bariatric patients who prefer or who are better suited to undergo less invasive and reversible surgery with lower preoperative complication rates.

However, there may be some complications from such surgeries like ulceration, gastritis (irritated stomach tissue), erosion the band may wear away a small area on the outside of the stomach which can lead to migration of the band to the inside of the stomach. Others include slippage an unusual occurrence in which the lower part of the stomach may prolapse over the band and cause an obstruction. Band placement - (high or low on stomach) - can cause extensive vomiting during the early postoperative period. This complication, unfortunately, was caused by lack of experience of the surgeons. Some patients undergo a second operation to reposition the band.

Arthritis & Joint Health
Wednesday 30 April 2008 @ 4:51 am

Many millions of people are affected by pain and suffering from Arthritis and research has shown that Glucosamine and Chondroitin sulphates combined have given these people new hope and relief from their painful ailments. Arthritis it causes pain, stiffness and sometimes swelling in or around joints. This can make it hard to complete simple movements you rely on every day for work or taking care of your family. But you can take steps now to avoid arthritis or to reduce pain and resume normal daily activities.

There are more than 100 different types of arthritis and the cause of most types is unknown. Scientists are currently studying what roles three major factors play in certain types of arthritis. These include the genetic factors you inherit from your parents, events which occur during your life and how you live on a day-to-day basis. The importance of these factors varies by type of arthritis.

Even though there is a lot of mystery surrounding arthritic joint pain, there is also a tremendous amount of research that points to certain nutrients that help nutritionally support this condition.

Both short and long term studies have been performed with a nutrient called Glucosamine Sulfate. Glucosamine works to stimulate joint function and repair. It is most effective in treating osteoarthritis, the most prevalent form of arthritis. A number of studies over the last 20 years have shown this to be true. For example, a 1982 clinical study compared usage of the NSAID ibuprofen with glucosamine sulfate, for osteoarthritis of the knee. The over-all results showed that 44% of the glucosamine group had pain relief compared to 15% for ibuprofen.

A long-term effects study was done with glucosamine and arthritis reported in the Lancet. the authors concluded that, “Glucosamine sulfate prevents the progression of osteoarthritis of the knee, in addition to relieving the symptoms.”
The health supplements carry by StarHerb for Arthritic and Joint Pain not only contain all of these nutrients; it utilizes the exact forms that were shown in the studies to be effective. The forms which are the best to look for are:

Glucosamine Sulfate 2Kcl which is the exact form used in most of the studies showing benefit.

It is hard to enjoy your family, friends, hobbies or even money without your health and joint pain is definitely one of the big contributing factors to a poor quality of life. StarHerb Health Nutrition products formula brings these great joint nutrients to nutritionally support the body along with 100% of your daily needs of the essential nutrients all in one formula.

Surviving Mesothelioma
Saturday 26 April 2008 @ 5:55 pm

Paul Kraus is a mesothelioma survivor and the author of Surviving Mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is an uncommon form of cancer, usually associated with previous exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant (cancerous) cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the body’s internal organs. Its most common site is the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity), but it may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity) or the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart).

Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or have been exposed to asbestos dust and fibre in other ways, such as by washing the clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos, or by home renovation using asbestos cement products.

Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 30 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos.

Characterized by a shortness of breath and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space, this is often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma.

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and cachexia, abdominal swelling and pain due to ascites (a buildup of fluid in the abdominal cavity). Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia, and fever.

If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face. Be aware, however, that these symptoms may be caused by mesothelioma or by other, less serious conditions. Obtaining a diagnosis of mesothelioma is often difficult, because the symptoms are similar to those of a number of other, less serious conditions.

In June 1997, Mr. Kraus was diagnosed with mesothelioma (a “terminal” cancer) and given only a few months to live. More than eight years later, he is alive with a good quality of life having rejected surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. He took an alternative approach to healing his cancer that encompassed mind, body, and spirit.

In his book about mesothelioma, Kraus sets out how he beat the odds. The introduction reflects Paul’s inspiration and committment to life:

“In my eighth year after diagnosis I remain well. I have outlived my prognosis by at least seven years and the medical specialist I visited not long ago told me that ‘you will be around for a lot longer yet.’ My survival has been hard work. The underlying assumption with all that I have done, and continue to do, is a strong belief that our bodies are designed with amazing self-healing capacities.”

Mr. Kraus has made himself available to other patients who would like to speak with him. The Surviving Mesothelioma website provides details about the book, how to speak directly with Mr. Kraus, facts and statistics about mesothelioma, conventional, alternative, biological and immuno-therapies, the latest medical news, directories of clinics that take a holistic approach to healing, and a patient forum where patients can share information and discuss issues of importance.

Using Water to Help Quit Smoking
Friday 18 April 2008 @ 2:45 pm

Stopping smoking is not easy. Ask anyone who has quit. And the problem is that once you’ve quit, you’re not over it! The craving continues: some folks who have been quit for 15 years say they would still like to have one.

But since you’re reading this section, I’m guessing you know all of this. Because if you didn’t smoke, you would have probably skipped over it. And you’re thinking, “I know it’s hard to quit — just give me something that will help me quit!”

The good news is that water will also help you get over some of the tough cravings … especially the first few days and weeks after you’ve quit.

The longer you’ve been smoking, the more your body has become accustomed to nicotine, which is a powerful drug. Part of the difficulty with stopping smoking is that the body is still craving it. But the flip side to quitting is that you’re body is getting rid of some powerful toxins. That’s the cause of the headaches a lot of folks have in the days and weeks after they’ve quit.

Water — lots and lots of water — helps the body to get rid of those poisons, and allows your tissues and organs to regenerate themselves. When you’re quitting smoking, it’s not unreasonable to think that you might want to double your water intake. That’s right — if you’re normally going to be drinking 20 glasses a day, drink 40 instead.

Now 40 glasses is a lot of water, and you may find it difficult to drink that much. That’s OK, but it wouldn’t hurt to aim that high. Just keep drinking a lot, and allow your body to get healthy again. Use those cigarette cravings as an opportunity to have another glass of water. If you slip, and have a cigarette, don’t beat yourself up. Just immediately drink 5 or 6 glasses of water to flush out the new toxins, and get right back into your new habit of not smoking.

And whatever you do, don’t give up! You’re too valuable to lose to tobacco!

Whether you use aromatherapy as a stand alone or as a complementary first aid treatment there are several aromatic oils I’d like to recommend you have in your aromatic first aid kit.

My recommendations include important details for you to consider when purchasing an oil, such as its Latin Name, Country of Origin, Method of Extraction and Part of the Plant Used. I also list the best oils to consider when creating a synergistic blend.

A good blood cleanser it is both antiseptic and antibacterial!

Peppermint is well known for relieving migraine type headache, as well as headache resulting from weak or poor digestive forces, congestion or sluggish circulation.

It is also known to relieve nausea from motion sickness.

As well as being helpful for treating acne, swollen gums, mouth thrush, or ulcers and toothache.

Soak your tired feet in a foot bath with a drop or two of Peppermint (disperse oil in water by blending first with a teaspoon of honey or jojoba oil before adding to your foot bath) to relieve tired, swollen ankles and feet.

Peppermint relieves congested sinus cavities, aids concentration and is good for memory retention, restorative for mental fatigue, use alone or in a blend when studying for an exam.
