Graduation Dress - a Time-Honoured Tradition
Saturday 2 April 2011 @ 6:57 am

Anyone who has attended a number of university graduations must have observed that graduation robes use a number of colours and shades in combination. Some may have blue and gold streaks set against the black of the robe. Others may have black streaks on a red robe. Other robes may not even have black at all, except for the pants and shirt worn underneath. The look differs from university to university and from college to college. But did you know that the collegiate cap and gown did not always look so stylish and streamlined?

Change began in England

Graduation attire used to be very simple because it was a way to honour the clerical tradition from which the first universities emerged. White was common, because it resembled the clerical gowns that earlier students and faculty in the universities wore. Then, in America, the Intercollegiate Commission and a professor named Gardner Cotrell Leonard came up with a code for graduation dress that stipulated that each academic discipline should be assigned a certain colour. This was in order that graduates could be distinguished one from another based on their disciplines.

And then, in England, universities began to diversify the colours of their graduation robes. This made the robes look much more attractive and stylish, which fitted modern tastes in fashion. This was a mixture of traditional and modern style of apparel, and probably seemed appropriate to the changing times. Academic regalia (which includes the robe or gown, sash, cap and tassel, along with other accessories) are based mainly on ancient European (and particularly British) styles.

Some institutes of higher level education, in fact still require students to wear uniforms when attending class. But these are far less common than the colleges and universities that allow students to dress casually.

The pride of wearing academic regalia

Being able to don the collegiate cap and gown is a great feeling. It is a sign of having achieved a high level of education, and of having overcome all the hardships, challenges, and obstacles that students may be confronted with in the academic world. It signifies a certain level of intellect and emotional, social maturity. Hence, graduation rites remain a solemn and formal occasion because this is believed to be the appropriate way to honour graduates.

Even though one will probably wear his or her graduation clothes only once (on graduation day), this doesn’t necessarily mean that buying a good set will be a waste. After all, one can keep these as keepsakes, and even display them on the wall of one’s trophy room, or living room. These will serve as reminders of the experiences, the failures and the triumphs, and all the growth that one experienced during ones days as a student on campus.

Knowing the long history of the graduation gown, and how it is a sign of one’s achievements that can be kept for memorabilia will hopefully encourage people to appreciate and participate eagerly in this time-honoured tradition.

Graduations Should Be Joyful Occasions
Sunday 6 March 2011 @ 12:26 pm

Graduations are very common in our society. The more a child achieves in the academic world, the more graduation or she (and his or her parents) will have to attend. For example, if a child is able to graduate from law school, then that means that he or she first donned the academic regalia for preschool, then for kindergarten, then for sixth grade, then for middle school, then for high school, then for college. When added to the wearing of college graduation gowns for law or medical school, this person (and his parents, if they attended each and every one of their child’s graduation ceremonies) would have undergone nearly identical ceremonies six times!

Of course, each new graduation ceremony is grander and more formal than the previous one. The speeches use bigger words and deal with deeper issues. This is to be expected, since college graduates, for example, are expected to be more mature than their high school counterparts. But to a parent, the differences may not be that obvious.

And considering the fact that parents probably have more than one child, and that they will have to attend each graduation ceremony of each child, it is more than understandable that such ceremonies may be viewed as a boor. After all, each parent has already undergone a series of such kinds of rites him/herself.

Still a reason to celebrate

Nevertheless, there is always reason to celebrate every time a member of the family achieves something, and graduating from a particular level of schooling is no exception. Throwing a party for your son or daughter is probably a good idea, and is a common practice nowadays. Of course, the party should be appropriate to the child’s age. Invite his or her schoolmates who have also just gone through the rite of passage. This will allow your son or daughter to develop friendships in a setting outside of school. Also, you will have the opportunity to get to know the families of your child’s friends. You may even get to establish long-term relationships.

Celebrations may be held in cooperation with other parents, and even your child’s teachers. In this case, the party may be conducted on school grounds, perhaps in your child’s classroom. Otherwise, the party could be held in someone’s home, or in a rented location.

The decorations need not be extravagant. In fact, a simple banner bearing a congratulatory message may be enough. What is really important is that the event is well attended, that there is enough good food and drinks for everyone to enjoy, and that the program is well thought out. The program should help the graduates and their families interact and celebrate with each other. It would also be a good idea to include the teachers.

Here’s a final thought: you won’t be able to attend graduation ceremonies forever, since your kids will one day complete schooling. You might as well make the most of them while you can.

Exceptions on Graduation Gown and Cap Rules
Tuesday 25 May 2010 @ 7:30 am

Here we explore exceptions, if any, to the rules that bind gowns and caps for graduation; and once we started exploring, we found that there are several!

At larger universities and colleges, for instance, graduates receiving bachelor’s degrees do away with the hood, except for people who have degrees from foreign universities. They’re allowed to go the whole way, with the hood, cap and gown. Finding cheap graduation gowns are going to be hard.

Also, a chief marshal is not required to be hooded, gowned and capped - she or he may wear something else, but the institution must approve the dress. Members of religious orders are allowed to exchange the gown and cap with habits. Ditto for military uniforms or people whom have special clothes that they are required to wear by a civil office.

Moreover, while those receiving certificates, degrees, or diplomas, below the baccalaureate level can also wear the gown and cap, it should be of a “light color.” their gowns must, however, be of the same type as those for bachelor’s degrees; and the hoods should be the same as those worn by holders of Bachelors of Arts degrees, albeit sans velvet-trimmed hoods and institutional colors.

Only members of a college or university’s governing body are allowed to wear doctor’s gowns with black velvet, regardless of their degrees. Their hoods should denote their actual degrees - people holding bachelor’s degree, for instance, should wear three-feet-long hoods; the hoods of those with master’s degrees should be three-and-a-half feet; while the hoods of those with doctor’s degrees are expected to be four feet long. Moreover, people with doctor’s degrees can have panels at the sides of their hoods.

The Committee on Academic Costumes and Ceremonies, meanwhile, says that it merely “offers observations and recommendations for the guidance of colleges and universities”, and can’t possibly enforce rules regarding academic costumes. in making decisions about regalia for ceremonial occasions. It also calls for abolishing what it refers to as academic symbols from the Middle Ages, which advocating adherence to tradition to maintain - “for practicality” - the symbolism of color and pattern.

It does make room for the adaptation of the basics to local conditions, as long as they are “reasonable and faithful to the spirit of the traditions which give rise to the code.” That is, radical changes are unacceptable - subdividing recognized disciplines, for instance, and adding new colors for these new subdivisions.
