Provide A Good Home For Your Website
Friday 23 May 2008 @ 7:23 pm

Selecting a web hosting company is like sending one of your children off to college. You may have complete confidence in your son or daughter’s abilities but unless they are placed in the proper environment they will not have the opportunity to thrive. Likewise, no matter how sophisticated or impressive the website you have designed may be, if you do not place the site where it can perform optimally you will likely be disappointed in the results.

Selecting web hosting is not simply finding a place where your website can reside. It is finding the company that offers the resources that will allow your website to operate effectively and to grow as the business or public demands. This means that you must be able to store and transfer enough data so that your site functions smoothly but also remains affordable.

Free web hosting services normally require that you allow ads to be placed on your site. These generate revenue for the hosting company by enabling them to display ads to visitors to your website. Only you can determine if the ads are appropriate for visitors to your site. In addition you will have to decide if the amount of storage and the available bandwidth will be sufficient for the type of website that you want to display. A free service may be completely appropriate for a personal website that is periodically modified. But trying to operate a site with significant traffic or a commercial focus may be “penny wise and pound foolish.”

All commercial web hosting companies are not created equal. Of course, cost is an issue but reliability and service will likely be major factors in the decision making process. You should expect your host to be up and functioning 100% of the time but you will likely only see guarantees of 99-99.5% uptime. Less than this is unacceptable.

If you will personally be managing much of the activity for your site, make sure that you are comfortable with the Control Panel. Some hosts present Control Panels that are cumbersome and complicated. You want to easily navigate through routine functions.
You will also want to make sure that the hosting company has functionality that you may not be using now but will likely use in the future. These would include PHP, MySQL, SSI, .htaccess, SSL, etc. Examine the offers for email and autoresponders also.

Many web hosting services offer very low rates if you commit to a year or more of hosting. While this may turn out to be an excellent value in the long term, it may be advisable to pay each month until you are confident in the service and, quite importantly, the quality of the technical support that they provide. Getting accurate responses to questions quickly will make your life as a webmaster less stressful.

Multiple Domain Web Hosting
Wednesday 21 May 2008 @ 12:14 am

With low cost of domain names and low hosting fees it is common
to own several websites. There are a few ways to manage multiple
domains. It’s important to know the advantages and disadvantages
of each method.

The most basic choice is whether or not to administer your
domains with the same host. Most web hosts offer packages which
can be set up to allow several sites on one account, or allow
individual sites to be operated under separate accounts.

You may have an existing website and like the services your host
provides. By starting a new website with the same host you get
the reassurance of dealing with a company you know. Sometimes
you may get a discount for every additional account with the
same host.

Using a different host for a new website will let you compare
the quality of hosting services offered by different companies.
In addition, separate hosts will provide each of your websites
with a different IP address.

Having different IP addresses is useful if you plan to link the
sites together for search engine optimization. Incoming links
are very important: a website with many incoming links will get
a higher position in most search engines. If the links are
coming from the same IP address their value will be discounted.

Hosting your websites with different hosting companies
guarantees that they have different IP addresses. An individual
IP address is available at extra cost from most companies. For a
fee each website can have its own unique IP address. Having a
unique IP address is required if you want to have a secure
connection (https) enabled on your site.

If you decide to host all your websites with the same company,
there are three basic ways to go. Each site could have its own
account, you could sign up for a reseller account, or you could
get a dedicated server account.

Hosting all your websites with one host has a few advantages,
but there is one major disadvantage - if your server goes down,
all your sites go down. If you depend on your sites for income
this can be painful and it’s a good idea to have at least one of
your sites with a different host.

Know Your Audience
Friday 16 May 2008 @ 8:26 pm

Designing a web site is hard enough. You spend countless hours working on how it is going to look and what cool specials effects it is going to have. You even spent hours picking out your site colors. So now what?

Now you have to promote it. But how? There are many ways. You can submit them to search engines, join a pay per click advertising program and link exchanges. Of these link exchanges are the ones most picked, mainly because they are free. But do they work.

According to the emails that keep coming into my inbox, link exchange is dead. The big search engines know what they are about. Back scratching. You link to me and I will link to you. It does not help your SEO or your quest to be #1 on Google or Yahoo. But it does give you awareness to the people you exchanged links to. And this can be helpful.

I believe there is no one way to get your site ranked number one with anyone. But I do think if you plan your strategy correctly and use all of the tools available to you, you can get what you are looking for. You designed your site and you know what your audience is looking for. You may even know where your audience is.

So just because you hear certain marketing methods are dead, don’t give up hope and sell your domain name. Use the normal process to get ranked among the big boys and use you link exchanges for awareness to you targeted audience.

A Basic Web Hosting Walkthrough
Tuesday 15 April 2008 @ 8:24 pm

If you are relatively new to the concept of having your very own place on the web this article may help fill you in on some of the basics.

There are two main categories of web hosting that I am going to cover in this article. The first is dedicated hosting and the second is shared hosting. The second type ,shared hosting, I usually break down into paid and free. Normally, unless you are a very special person, you can’t get dedicated hosting for free.

Before I break down the hosting types, however, let’s clear up some terminology…

Bandwidth is the amount of data your site can transer in a given period of time. This is sometimes referred to as transfer. When people view your site on the internet they are downloading it from the server and this uses up your bandwidth.

Storage is basically the measure of hard drive space your web site is allowed to take up on a server.

OK, now on to the rest of it…

Dedicated hosting , or more like dedicated server, is where your web site gets one entire server to itself. You are pretty much entitled to all of the resources this server has to offer. The entire bandwith and hard drive capacity is yours including memory for processing and whatever else. With larger, traffic intensive web sites dedicated hosting is pretty much a must but shared hosting is usually more than sufficient for individuals and small to smallish medium businesses.

Shared hosting is basically when a hosting company puts your web site on a server with web sites from other customers. Your hosting provider will usually give you monthly limits for bandwidth, storage, email accounts and such. Depending on what server you were put on and how good your hosting provider is sometimes things can get a little crowded on a server and cause your site to be slow and unresponsive.

Free hosting is shared hosting you get from a free service like geocities or another. It is usually incredibly limited. Sometimes you can “earn” a decent free hosting account by posting in forums and such but in my opinion paid hosting and a real domain name are much better.

Paid hosting is actually inexpensive these days. You can get good solid hosting that will support a small business for under $100 per year. Usually hosting providers include a free domain name and free setup as well as a money back garantee.

I hope you found this article helpful. If you decide to buy hosting make sure to be incredibly picky. The last thing you want is to end up with the wrong web host. Read some articles on picking the right domain name and hunt down reviews of web hosting companies.

I wouldn’t go with companies that aren’t huge and well established. I’ve known many people who have lost web sites when unstable hosting companies went under.

Be vigilant and have fun. Getting a web site is the cheapest way to start a business.

Four Common Mistakes Made Using Web Templates
Monday 7 April 2008 @ 6:19 pm

There are templates available for web sites, web page headers
and banners, navigation links, order buttons, and more.
Templates save time and money, and they can greatly improve the
look of a web site. However, the improper use of templates can
have the opposite affect. The following are the four most common
mistakes people make when using pre-made web templates.

1. You are probably familiar with the phrase, “too much of a
good thing.” It is not uncommon for a particular graphic
template to become very popular. If you use an overused template
or image, it will diminish its impact, and you site will lose
its uniqueness that sets it apart from your competitors.

2. If you purchased professionally made, quality web graphics,
typically, all you’ll need to do is add your own text, and maybe
even your own graphic image. A common mistake some template
users make is to alter the template so much that it no longer
resembles the way it first appeared. What was once a
professionally created image (which is why you chose it in the
first place), is now a less than quality graphic. What is the
point of using a template if you completely change it?

3. The flip side of this is also a mistake some people make.
While many good templates need little else than your own text,
some may require a little more customization to be appropriate
for your situation. Some templates, for instance, come with
generic text that is intended to be replaced with your own. If
you do not change this text, it may look out of place on your
site. Also you may send the wrong message to your visitors if
you don’t change an image in a header template. For example, if
your audience is work-at-home moms and the template has a
picture of a businessman, it would be confusing as to who you
were targeting on your site.

4. The fourth most common mistake is simply making the wrong
choice of a template to begin with. Some templates won’t be
appropriate for your web site. The overall design may be out of
place. For example, the theme of your web page is American
Southwest, while the template’s theme is Gothic. The colors may
conflict with your site’s colors. The image(s) may not relate to
the subject of your site or your target audience. No matter how
good the web template may look, if it doesn’t fit with your web
site then it will do nothing to improve the look of your site.

The proper use of templates is a balance of choosing an
appropriate design for your needs, coupled with the right amount
of customization of the template. When you have struck the right
balance, a quality template will definitely improve the quality
of your web site.

Let’s Go Back To Photoshop’s Beginning
Friday 21 March 2008 @ 6:33 pm

Perhaps you may be wondering how Photoshop started? Or perhaps
you do not care so long as it is there to bring life to images,
photos and texts you will be fine?

Whatever the reason may be, it is still better to look back in
order to move further…

The Discovery

John Knoll was then working at Industrial Light and Magic while
Thomas Knoll was studying his Ph. D. on image processing at the
University of Michigan. Both of them worked on a larger, more
cohesive computer application which they called Display. They
experimented further in order to give it more features like
gamma correction, loading, saving different file formats and
others. To cut the story short, Display became ImagePro in the
year 1988. The sold it as a commercial application.

Transition comes

ImagePro was given a new name when they potential publisher
suggested PhotoShop during the duo’s demo. Actually, it just
stuck. Fortunately, PhotoShop became a big hit that most
software companies switched to it. So far, only Adobe proved to
be its competent contender. PhotoShop was then sold wholesale
but only licensed and distributed. Royalties were still going to
the Knolls. Knoll brothers further incorporated other features
to improve the software. Eventually, through the encouragement
of John and Russell Brown PhotoShop became the biggest dynamo in
image enhancement. It was finally launched in February in the
year 1990.

Imaging made digital

The release of PhotoShop in the E-commerce web development world
is a great success. And that success continued. The development
of version 2.0 made it more accepted and loved. The new version
added new features such as Pen tool, Duotones, import and
rasterisation of Illustrator files and support for CMYK color.
Mark Hamburg also added Bézier paths to make it more
interesting. The addition of layers is the most fabulous
contribution of PhotoShop.

The present invasion

Adobe continues to come up with new features for PhotoShop. In
fact, the latter is now part of the Creative Suite 2. Still,
PhotoShop is considered the leader in imagery. Its reign can be
flagrantly acknowledge since its inception up to the present
time. In addition, it has already reached its version 4. From
this we can say that its competitors have still a lot to be
learned from the dynamic and invincible imaging software!

Validate your Website for Search Results
Friday 21 March 2008 @ 12:26 am

So, you spent a considerable amount of time designing your website. You have attractive graphics on display, user-friendly navigation, perhaps a bit of Flash or javascript to enchance the user’s experience on your site. The site’s content is fresh, relevant, and original. A site such as yours should attract much attention in relevant search results, so why is incoming traffic so slow? Why are the search engines not caching your information as quickly and as often as you would like?

You look at your website and wonder what could be wrong. On the outset, the site looks fine, but consider this: what the average Internet user sees is not what the search engine spider (or “bot”) sees when it crawls the web to collect the data. The spider reads the site’s code, all of the characters and data you or your HTML editor added to create the site. Oftentimes, a spider will attempt to crawl a site only to become entangled in a different kind of web! If there is one character out of place, additional code that shouldn’t be there, or code that is unreadable to spiders, your website just may be bypassed altogether.

Remember all of those fancy Flash and javascript doo-dads you implemented? Some spiders can’t read that type of code, and you may be blocking them from collecting your information for search. Be sure to allow room for spiders to move around. Keep complicated code to a minimum or forgo it altogether. The cleaner a website’s code is, the better a web crawler can spider the site and gather relevant data for caching. The more relevant, updated information a seach engine spider gathers from a site, the better that site’s chances are in search results.

A good way to determine whether or not your website is searchable is to have the code validated. The W3C Validator is a free service recommended to validate site code and check for conformance to W3C standards. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international consortium where member organizations, a full-time staff, and the public, work together to develop standards for the World Wide Web. Simply enter your URL in the validator and a list of errors, where applicable, will alert you to what needs to be improved in the code of your site. Think of it as fine tuning, it may take some time to improve your site’s code, but in the long run the increase in search referrals will have made it work the hard work.
